D!@# cats
« on: October 06, 2008, 10:38:59 pm »

New player. I've got my third fortress in the background right now. Awesome game.

Well, this has been mentioned before, but I'm getting the "lazy cat" bug in 40d, on two different machines, one XP, one Vista. The cats will kill vermin inside the fortress, walk around with it for a while, and then drop it with a "too injured" message. This isn't a new bug.

But not only this, my cat on all three forts has had this unexpected behavior: It constantly runs outside, kills a vermin, AND BRINGS IT INSIDE AND LEAVES IT THERE FOR MY DWARVES TO PICK UP. My refuse stocks are outside... maybe I'll move them indoors with an airlock and make the entrance catproof. Come to think of it, I petproofed the front door as the cat was coming in with something, and a little while later, while I wasn't looking, it somehow managed to drag it in anyway.

Then again, cats actually do this IRL so it might be coded... but is it really necessary to have it in-game? If it's just a ghost in the machine it's a pretty interesting one.

It's extra reality.
Suggestion: Put all cats in a 5x5 room with walls all around it. Pull lever that opens bridge under them. Laugh as they become puffs of smoke within seconds of hitting the magma.

The cat i taking it to it's master.  I assume that if the master is starving, this will actually sustain them, allowing your dwarf to continue working rather than continuously chasing down his own vermin.

That explains my (RL) cats perfectly... They just think I'm starving.
I don't know what to do about the dead zone around my house, though.

Seriously f**k cats.

In the current version, only rawnetically modified lobstercats are of any use.  But that's to be expected.

Well, cats do this IRL for social/dominance reasons: the alpha gets first dibs on any food, just like with dogs.

Back on topic, how would I go about either a.)getting cats to properly dispose of vermin or b.) to not pick them up in the first place so they can kill more efficiently. For that matter, it would be nice if i could get dogs to do it to. presumably, from observing dogs, one would not simply sit there as a big, juicy cockroach crawled by.

-Edit-
I figured it out. testing now.

Get dogs to eat vermin that get left laying around. My buddy's dog is constantly eating the remains of rodents and lizards and frogs that his cat has decided to kill and bring home.

Get vermin to eat dead vermin. Why wouldn't rats go after dead lizards?

Are you serious that your cats bring the stuff what they catch to you? I thought that this is not possible, considering that the cat is a very dumb animal.  ;D I always learn something new!  :P

What, are you serious? Cats are pretty smart. It's very common for them to catch birds and mice and things and leave them on your doorstep/in your shoe/on your face as you're sleeping. It's considered a "gift".

Correct. All I know is, that dogs are much more smarter than the cats.  ;D

It is because a lot of people believe that because for the most part you cannot train, or cannot easily train, a cat to do tricks that it is automatically stupid.

I've met people who thought my dog was stupid because I couldn't train him the paw trick.

I have 2 dobermanns. They can open the door themselves [if not locked of course  ;D], they pick up anything with their mouth and carry until I say that drop it [just for fun you know  :D], they sit/lie down when I ask them to do it, and they won't move until I say so, and I could continue.
They were trained for 6 months only. So yeah, now tell me about cats.  ;D

PS. Sorry for derailing the thread.  :-X

I have a cat. She can open doors (jumps onto handle and clings to it and it opens the door a crack so she can enter the room) and can walk on fences about as wide as one of her paws without falling off. She can also jump rather prodigously in general. She's not trained at all.  ;D

Moral of the story: Cats and dogs are different animals. Different animals have different features, strengths and weaknesses, and general personalities. This makes it difficult to compare them subjectively while still being effective. One man's dumb draft animal is another man's holy oxen, after all :)

Cats are devious, dogs are obedient.  I would say that, in general, they're probably rather equal as far as brains are concerned.  Maybe a notch or two extra on the feline side, but there are some remarkably intelligent dogs as well.  Not to mention some exceedingly dumb cats.

I'd rather have a dog than a cat though.  I don't think a lobstercat would be very nice to have around the house either...
