...Not that this helps my case any, but I'm considering taking a haitus until Army Arc comes out... and spending the DF time in between drawing up plans for an ultimate ocean-suspended fortress with a staggered-drop drawbridge with the help of some graph paper.

Is this good or bad?

Well, I actually had the reverse. Occasionally, when I get the "Thief! Protect the hoard from skulking filfth!" notice, my mouse goes into the upper right corner to hit the "intercept" button.

X-Com is the anti-dwarf fortress.  Your soldiers are ultra disciplined and can be micro-managed down to a fraction of a second.  But you are forced to send your men (and women) into enemy structures constantly, leaving them at the mercy of the enemies defenses.

Ultra disciplined my foot, they run at the drop of a bloody hat.  Yeah I know you've lost three squad members to the flying amoeba and I made a guy blow himself up with a detpack, but get back into the fight dammit.  No don't throw your gun and stand in the doorway!
