Need ideas for buildings for a above ground fort.
« on: October 06, 2008, 04:13:08 pm »

So far the construction of by above ground fort has been going good but I'm starting to find myself running out of ideas of what type of building to build next.

I currently have a total of 7 buildings.
Meeting hall
Granary
Gatehouse
Lumbermill
Dinner with an underground brewery
Fishery
Apartament

One of the buildings that I realy want to build is a church with an underground crypt but I am also looking for designs for a blacksmith or anything else someone has an idea for.

post some pix or a map plz!

I built an above ground fort a while ago with an emphasis on castle building.

Do you have a castle/city wall with moat and siege equipment? that took me a long time to build (but I admit I don't have any siege equipment set up.  I'll get to that sooner or later).

You'll need noble buildings too.  Maybe some mansions would be fun to build.

Church with catacombs is a great idea.
As far as a blacksmith, make it mostly an open shed with a roof over it for the main forges, and a closed section for storage.

After that, how about a barn for the animals?

Don't forget making a giant hammer in the sky for your hammerer to live in.  One directly over your dining room.  Supported by a single wooden support 10 stories tall.

A prison... with torture chambers!   ;D

You can have a section for "dwarven justice" for your own inmates, and a separate section for prisoners of war and useless peasants enemies of the state.

Firing squad execution area (target dummy behind in front of prison chains).

A TEMPLE! A big zigurat, possibly with flowing watter channels on each level, and a sacrificial alter on top from which to fill the channels with goblin blood.

Code: [Select]
        #S#
        |P|
      #~#^|~#
    #~~######~#
  #~#########~~~#
#~~~#############~#
Where S is water source, P is marked as pit # is wall, | is bars, ^ is a single no quality spike trap hooked up to a lever elsewhere and ~ is watter.

A grid-based sewer system, on which the blocks of the city are to be based. The sewers will start as channels in the ground, but as the city grows and the sewers get larger, you cover them with floors and use them as streets. Then flood the sewers and use them for a water supply/dump. Heck, if you could rig it you could make the water move in waves and push things around.

Off the top of my head:

Apartment blocks
Row-houses
Cabins on the outskirts
Dedicated homes for legendary/highly skilled/important Dwarves
Craftsdwarves halls
Mansions for nobility (bonus points for segregated districts)
Fountains or canalworks
Elaborate town square or meeting places
Parks
Trade/shopping center

Don't forget to build a huge Fortress Treasury made out of triple thick rock walls where you will keep all of your golden and silver coins. Also, entrance traps and chained dogs.

Don't forgot the mandatory screw-the-world device, be it destroying everything with magma, a flood of water, or a huge pile of rocks falling from the sky to destroy everything.

And don't forget to store gems/valuable metals/breeding pairs of exotic animals. And protest it with a moat. Around the whole thing. Even the underground bits.
