Location Finder: Multiple Matches?
« on: October 06, 2008, 02:23:17 pm »

I love the location finder, but I'm curious about one thing. I just gen'd a world that matched my parameters on the 12th iteration of the counter. It keeps running however, until it runs out (127 I think).

Does it show me the first match or the last? Can I see the other matches if the one it chose isn't quite right?

Far as I know it picks one match and one match only, which is rather... well, retarded, frankly.

Last few times I used it it just showed me the upper left most tile in my map since I was just searching for magma only.  I assume it starts serching un the upper left, and returns the first value.

Too bad it still searches everywhere on the map even if your location is on the first tile.

Better to use a reveal program, since... well, frankly, it's faster. Unless you want a cave, I guess.

In my months of lurking, I've only ever heard of Reveal causing tile problems. Is this still the case?

I just set it all to "ALWAYS" on my init tab, then I can just look for the area with the stuff I need.

I used to use Regional Prospector, which was my "Embark Reveal" of choice, but I haven't found an updated version yet, so I'm not sure if it still works with .40d.

I've also had some troubles with showing terrain features via the worldgen file, so the location finder has really been my only option (besides the troublesome "embark and see if it's good enough" strategy). However, I'd chalk this up to the fact that I'm an idiot. :)

I think this is probably my best option. Thanks.

The reason regional prospector hasn't been updated is because it's become obsolete, as Timekitten said, if you go into the init file and go down to the show_embark settings, you can change them to all to ALWAYS, and then you can see everything from the embark screen just like regional prospector used to.

Sometimes it's worth just searching by hand.
One time I found a flat, heavily wooded area with a brook and heavy vegetation. Plus two layers of obsidian. I'm surrounding my compound and keep with an obsidian wall thick enough for homes, shops and a wagon track. I may even turn the second level into a holding tank for a bazillion gallons of water so I can try to wash away the sieges.
Another time I found two linked mesas between a forest and the badlands. Four biomes, coal and gem/ore deposits all over the place.

sometimes randomly finding a neat location with some quirks can inspire you to build a themed fort, too.

that said i still think the site finder should let you search multiple matches and include sand in the search algorythm

This for sure.  If you can't make it or import it you sure should be able to see it before you embark.
