WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THIS SOONER
« on: October 06, 2008, 12:24:51 pm »

Problem: Sieges are finicky. Try as I might, I've yet to trigger one... though I am, admittedly, playing with ~50 dwarves, capped, and praying that my modifications to the init file will make them come before that.

Fact: Ambushes are coming fairly regularly.

Fact: Cage traps catch goblins.

Fact: Caged things survive indefinitely.

Fact: I can build a whole lot of cages.

Solution to Problem: Catch 1,000 Goblins. Release them all at once. Laugh.

Thanks.

Also, my guys seem to be hesistant to stuff the goblins into one cage... though this may be because they're occupied with the ceaseless hauling of dead things from out of the cave, which I am purging with a single dwarf.

Nevermind, they figured it out!

Will stuffing 1,000 goblins into a single cage cause the space-time continuum to explode or will it just be too heavy to lift?

Dwarves can lift any item. They just won't move very fast. Remember to take away all of their equipment first. Then when you release them all at once make it so they have to get by some creature to be able to escape. Dragon, GCS, bronze colussus or even your best champion. That will make them afraid of you.

I beleive you either remove the Babysnatcher tag, or increase your cap to 60. Not entirely sure though.

Disarm them? Let a Colossus get the glory? NEVER! I want a challenge, not a candy-massacre!

....though to be fair I haven't figured out how to take their stuff yet.

Whenever you do release them, make a video.

And for bonus points, release them in the middle of your fortress. In the dining hall, for preference.

I thought you could only stuff three into one cage?

Thank you cat control, Not really, I found away to make them trapped, and still breed, works for all the non-owned pets.
So thank you animal farms.

Might be worth using for dogs, if nothing else. Cats can die in a fire.

And yes, there will be a video.

How did you change the ini files to bring sieges before your population reaches 80?

...Who changed the ini to bring sieges? Because you can't.

And yes, you do need 80 to start sieges, as I recall. But this sounds funnier.

Fact: Caged things survive indefinitely.

Actually, creatures in cages will die of old age. But, the point is moot since goblins have the gift of immortality, but that's something to keep in mind when you try long-term storage for something with a slightly shorter lifespan, say, ratmen.
Caged creatures that have their hunger/thirst flags tripped will also die eventually.

Obviously you should make a gigantic arena and throw in hundreds of wild creatures. Or dragons. Or cats.

To the RAWz! @ await you.

And so, our journey to the great realm of raws, which the RNG himself (no females in the internet) refer to when create something RANDOM.

Oh well, to the point: You need to go to the entity default and change the Population_Active or something to 1 or 2. The default is 3. With 2, I think you need 30 - 50 dwarf for them to siege. With 1, you'll be sieged in your first year! Of course, if you have THAT many wealth.
