Using lots of stone
« on: October 05, 2008, 07:23:35 pm »

What is a great way to use obscene amounts of stone, and many workers?

I have been sort of cheating (30 workers with all legendary skills and full stats) to screw, and focus on the militaristic aspects of DF (every immigrant is a soldier).

Now that I've dug out my fortress and completed most of the things that need to be done (food, defense, etc) I'm looking for ways to get rid of all of my surplus stone in an interesting way. I don't want to destroy it, but I'm looking for ideas on what to build with it.

So far this is all I have been able to come up with:
A huge wall. A few tiles high and a few tiles thick, with fortifications and the occasional tower for my all-marksdwarf army to shoot down from.

A flooding and draining system: I have my fort completely walled off with 2 layers of walls. I have been thinking about designing something that would flood the zone between the two walls to drown anything inside, then drain the water back out once everything is dead. If I can get some sort of lava, I would use that instead.

Make a massive statues of something, and maybe a fountain too.

Make a shower for my dwarves (I'll do this anyway, but it doesn't use much stone.)

And that's it.

Please post any ideas you have, no matter how silly. I would prefer something that I can use (so not just stuff that has little purpose).

Thanks!

My current fort has an area about 1/6th the size of the map walled off as my fort. It has four tile thick walls on the bottom, the second floor is fortifications on the outside, five tiles of floor, then a wall (so bolts and stuff wont go flying off into my meeting area. Next floor up has a one tile wide wall around the outside and the entire area is floored over, making a roof.

Make weather system - a giant cistern spanning the entire map 15 z levels up, with strategically placed hatch covers attached to levers.  Pull a lever corresponding to a hatch cover when you want it to rain. Do this with magma or water - your choice.

Make the entrance of your fort a giant Dwarf head, with a hollow inside so you can station troops in the eyes to shoot at seiges, nose that sprays magma, and best of all, a mouth and closes its teeth, and if you really wanna be creative, you can make the mouth drink water to wipe away siegers.....im doing it

I would love to see a 3dwarf or lifevis screenshot of that once it's complete. Please, do this.

You can create a Dwarf made mountain. Keep laying down massive squares of walls, then create ramps, and keep building up.

of course you'll need quite a lot of room.

Currently, I have two main projects planned:

A giant stone cauldron that will fill with water from the river that runs through my map, that will flood the space between my fortress walls and the perimeter walls. The water will drain by being pumped back into the cauldron.

A big wall with a solid rock bottom level (besides secret hallways for my soldiers to move through) and a floored second level. Every screens-width or so (like 30 tiles) I'll make a tower. Like the great wall of china.

I'll probably do the wall thing first, since that will be simplest to build, and my marksdwarves can use it. I'll probably make a small scale water flooding chamber later, since I haven't worked with water very much and I don't want to deal with flooding my entire map (I have walled off about 8 screen's worth of tiles, and I'm at 125x50 tiles, that's a lot of water to pump around).

So for now, I'll probably stick with making a huge maze of traps for goblins to go through: first a couple cage traps (so I can make a colliseum), then a series of lever operated spike traps, then a bridge trap that leads down to whatever I feel like (perhaps a bunch of war dogs), then a series of atom smashers, all placed randomly, then a drowning chamber (in case I don't want my soldiers to get tired :P) then if I let them get passed all that they can rush my marksdwarves in the towers.

Do Escher's Waterfall.

Calculate a spiral.  It starts at the very top Z-level and ends at the bottom Z-level.  The spiral goes completely and perfectly around your local area.  The spiral's cross-section is shaped into a U, and goes down one level at regular intervals using ramps.

Once the spiral is complete, fill it with water.

Then add a pump that takes the water at the very bottom and sends it back to the very top.

Make your worlds largest display of phallic imagery in 3-D, then abandon during a goblin siege.

Make it shoot magma out the top, too.

How would setting Catapults on fire get rid of stone?

I mean, I wholeheartedly approve of flaming catapults, but I fail to see how this helps matters.

Although throwing flaming stones at my opponents would ROCK! (literally ^_~)
