Yet Another Artifact Thread!

This time, sensible artifacts!

That means no "Ectolistened the Sunken Fork": A Pig Tail Sock. The name has nothing to do with the artifact.

However, my recent

"Everauthored the Ignited Poem": A Pyrite Idol would be completely sane; its a statue of some sort of demigod poet.

Ok, this is as good a spot as any.  This is a post on gold, artifacts, weaponsmithing vs armorsmithing, kings, and general awesomeness.

I build out a fort (around 50-80 dwarves atm) which has access to several veins of gold, magma, and an above ground river which cuts through two small hills.  My fortress uses the interior of both hills , the south hill containing a volcano-ish magma vent, the north hill providing the main entrance/ egress into the surrounding forest/flatland.

I made a nice little set of waterfalls between the two hills powered by a few windmills, and these falls return the water to the river below near the bridge which connects the two fortress halves and makes my dwarves happy.  I have buried those of the original 7 which died various horrible ways (plenty of goblin attacks here) on floating platforms beneath the falls in golden sarcophagi.  Others which have died (several Champion wrestlers) are buried in the same in the north hill where the barracks are.

I was also lucky to receive in a few immigrant waves some armorsmiths and a weaponsmith.  After a few crappy ditorite/gneiss/wooden sceptre/sock/etc artifacts, I was overjoyed to see my weaponsmith taken by a mood.  This was at the same time I was trying to decide what I wanted to do with this fortress, and was slightly upset I had not found any other smeltable ore (iron in particular).  He takes a few golden bars and busts out with:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So now i had a gimmick.  Of course I needed to make a golden fortress for the golden warhammer, and get a suitable ruler (hopefully a king) to wield it.  I built a Golden throne room up high inside the volcano with golden statues and a golden bridge across the entire width of the magma vent which could be retracted in the middle to appease armok with the blood of the unfortunate.  I am currently expanding the golden theme to other areas, although it is somewhat slow.

I have a couple of questions which have occurred to me regarding these events.  a) I assume that the warhammer is just for show since its made of gold (can't be used as a weapon).  True?  b)  I have a legendary weaponsmith now and only normal armorsmiths.  I am thinking the best use of my time and limited weapon/armor making ores would be to build masterwork weapons, rather than lesser quality armor.  Anybody with any experience on the weapon vs armor front care to comment?  c)  So now that I have a pretty cool throne room for a king, anyone want to share anything I should be worried about on the way to getting him?  (would be my first king, if I can get him)?  d)  Any other cool golden fortresses you built or know about?

Thanks for reading.

Good weapons + bad armor = nasty sparring sessions.  But by all means, get that guy cracking on some good weapons while you've got him.  You can always import the raw stuff, and it's good to make the most of that guy while he's stil around.

Also, a weapon is a weapon.  Dwarves don't care what it's made out of.  However, I believe that only champions will wield artifact weaponry...  At least, that was a popular rumor going around before.

But be careful who you give it to.  They won't let go until you can pry it from their cold, dead hands.

a) wrong. it's perfectly useable and possibly beats out a masterwork of a better type. b) make sure you have armor, though. especially if you don't already have sparring gear.

Since I'm here, I may as well mention that my first artifact EVER was a bronze shield. It was encrusted with a couple minor gems as well.  This was back in 2D, so henever dropped the thing.

Ironically, it didn't get nearly as much use as the diorite floodgate that was my second artifact.  Again, he wouldn't drop it, so I ended up sending him out to hunt deer with the thing.

There wasn't usually a whole lot left of the deer by the time he was finished...  It did take him a while to catch them though, since dragging around something that big is not particularly easy on the legs.

I want to see that functionality returned.   One of my dwarves has made two artifacts, both of which are giant heavy things.  It'd be hilarious to see him going around carrying them both (and what would happen if you had more then two...?  Leaning tower of Dwarfdom?)

How did you manage the twoo artifacts?  I was under the impression that the game made sure dwarves didn't mood twice.

"Spiralrubbed the Tenebrous Sounds", a Golden Warhammer.  Value 108,000.
This is a Golden Warhammer.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.  It is studded with Gold.  On the Hammer is an image of dwarves in Gold.

Make it the Aegis-fang of your fort, wielded by only the strongest warrior in the land!
And after he perishes to a demon, make a golden pedestal in a extremely trapped room and put the hammer atop it.

My best artifact:
Cellhorn the Ageless War, Lead chain mail. It's currently being worn by an elite wrestler. It must be pretty heavy though...
Plus there's the whole lead being poisonous thing.

I'd love to see the DF worth of an artifact like this : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/For_the_Love_of_God

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"For the Love of God is a sculpture by artist Damien Hirst produced in 2007. It consists of a platinum cast of a human skull encrusted with 8,601 flawless diamonds, including a pear-shaped pink diamond located in the forehead of the skull."

i had a armorer (who'd just turned legendary by normal means!) go fey in my fort and make this
(minor spoilers)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Quite a fitting name, i figured. So i gave it to my champion who also had "Vesh Ekast 'the dust of saving" an iron war hammer. He belts the goblins good.

"Polishfrightful the Harshness of Mechanisms" - a giant Iron axe blade.
Once I had a gcs silk short skirt, menacing with spikes of gcs silk(can't really picture those). I don't remember the name, but it was properly BDSM-sounding.
