[40d] Worldgen bug - fortress being duplicated
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:00:46 am »

I have a fortress. In fact, I have THREE fortresses. All of them are exactly identical. Every time I generate a new world, I get a new world with... a new fortress. The exact same fortress as the fortress in the first world.

I have three identical fortresses now. Abandoning the second or third does nothing, and I don't want to try abandoning the first. I have no further worlds to adventure in.

What should I do? This is highly unusual. Should I send the three world saves, or my entire DF folder?

Do you mean a player-made fortress or a world gen fortress?

Player-made.

This is what my load screen looks like, after generating two new worlds. NEW worlds, mind you.

Uh, you're probably using the same seeds over and over?

That's his LOAD screen, not his START NEW GAME screen.

If it is relevant, I'm playing this particular Fortress on my new laptop, which came preinstalled with Vista (32 bit). Vista might be screwing with something.

Oh, right.

I'm still confused though -- OP, we can't tell what's happening from your description.  Are you saying that when you generate a new world, instead of appearing in the "Start Playing" world list, it immediately turns into a savegame?

it sounds like the naming seed is looping itself, or repeating excessively

can you tell us what else repeats?

if the dwarves are genned with the same name each time...

definately a bug though, something should check for identical names

Yes, exactly.

No, it's not just the names. the entire fortress is duplicated. I can load the second or third world and it gives me the exact same fortress as the first one. The dwarves, as far as I know, are exactly the same as well. It's like every time I generate a new world, the game is generating it, then overwriting the new world with the first world.

If you abandon the fortresses and start an adventurer, are the world maps also the same?

If I abandon the second or third fortresses, the savegame immediately pops back - it's like I didn't abandon at all. It's impossible to start an adventurer.

There is some weirdness with vista and saves and the virtual store folder, I haven't quite figured it out yet.

I would suggest running DF from a folder on your desktop, definatly make sure it's NOT in the program files folder. I'm running vista 64-bit and I haven't had any problems. Also I would reccommend turning off User Account Control (UAC). That might be blocking the program from running correctly. This is a security feature so make sure you are ok with turning it off.

Ohhhhh. Yes, I installed it to Program Files. I'll move it to somewhere else.
