Wait a second.

When I played around with adventurer mode, I noticed a lot of things affected your speed: agility, standing, thirst, hunger, sneaking... and swimming.

But at Legendary+5 swimming, my overtrained adventurer moved faster in water than on land.

... would a SPEED[0] Legendary+5 swimmer swim backwards in time?

(hahah, no, it's probably percentage, but that would be hilarious)

No. Swimming speed and walking speed are calculated seperately. It's not based on land speed at all. If you had [SPEED:0] and a legendary+5 swimming ability, I'm guessing you'd move slower on water than in land.

And, for the record, somewhere in the speed formula, a 1 is added, so you don't move infinitely fast. If I'm reading the wiki right, a speed 0 creature simply moves 1 step every frame. Dwarves (with no penalties, bonuses, or multipliers) move 1 step every 10 frames, so a speed 0 creature (with no penalties, bonuses, or multiplers) moves ten times as fast as a dwarf.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

To test that, you would want:

...What if you set your speed to a negative value?

I'd assume Toady is good enough of a programmer to include some error checking and either set it to 0, or give an error message when that was attempted. Hell, the game might not even parse the minus symbol from the raws.

Well, yeah, but DF being what it is someone should check. You know. For science.

TESTING IN PROGRESS

EDIT, AFTER GENERATING A WORLD, AND SETTING SPEED TO -1, NOTHING HAS OF YET EXPLODED. WORLD IS GENERATED.

EDIT2. CAN SEE NO DIFFERENCE TO CREATURE SPEED AS OF YET. SNEAKING REDUCES DISPLAYED SPEED TO 526.

EDIT3. AN UNTRAINED TEST CREATURE WITH A MAUL CAN BEAT UP A HUMAN PIKEMASTER NEAR INSTANTLY. NO COUNTERATTACKS.

EDIT4. This creature is dammed fast. You know those, 'Dicklicker is no longer stunned' messages you get, when everyone is waking up in a town? About three of them will pop up, he'll beat a shopkeeper to death, and then another three will show up.

Edit5. GODFUCKING DAMMIT THINGS CAN STILL BLOCK THE THING WITH -1 SPEED.

I was disappointed to find that you can neither dodge arrows nor fire multiple arrows so that they're stuck in the air until you move (at which point whoever was on the receiving end would be filled with arrows~) with speed:0

Being able to beat the crap out of people before the body parts fly away is pretty cool though.

Note: When at [SPEED:0], getting more agillity actualy decreases your speed.
