Argh! expolde in a huge display of blood and gore god dammit!
« on: October 03, 2008, 12:51:10 am »

I have this pit right? a 4x4 tower 3z levels high and 10 spikes bundled together at the bottom and when i chucked a supermutant down there (fallout mod) and my one problem is this. whenever someone goes to pull the lever they soil themselves and run away despite the complete lack of any weapons on the mutant. i know why this is happening so i will rebuild the place but how many z levels are sufficient to keep the buggers happy away? stupid mutants

Put the lever away from it, is the best thing you can do.
People will still be afraid of things even if their missing all 4 limbs and both eyes.

Dwarf: Why did you all stop yer werk?
Dwarf2: There was a hellish scene. A creature of unthinkable horror.
Dwarf: A dragon? Bronze Colossus? Hydra?
Dwarf2: No, it was... a BUNNY! GAAAAAHHHH!
Dwarf3: Did he say bunny? GAHHHHH!

So yes, best you can do to make sure a lever is pulled is put it in a place where nothing will ever get to it. Like a control room off the main hall. And with notes, this won't create a rickety deathtrap of unknown levers.

I personally have a 4 Z level pit, I have a 2x4 area one Z level down ( the same size as the pitting hole ) that has 8 hatch covers connected to a lever. When I pit something it lands on said hatch covers, I order the lever pulled ( out of line of sight of the hole ) and they drop it the rest of the way. When it lands I pull it again to close it.

Now they have no line of sight to the things in the hole, and I can drop more in if I desire, or if I want to get a dwarf close to the hole to remove the cage I used I can do that as well. I use this typically on goblins ( although I do have another method of delivery, there's nothing as cool as dropping 18 dogs on top of them at the same time ) as it drops them right into my maze/arena.

3-4 z-levels? Really?
If you want things to 'splode on impact 10 z-levels is the most reliable. Won't need the spikes either.

Slightly off topic:

I was preparing a moat for my fortress, but at this point had just dug a small channel pit and put a drawbridge over it.

Goblins attack.  I send out the wrestlers to fight.  Blood, gore, dwarves win, yay!  Wrestlers are taken off duty and trundle inside.

Migrants appear almost immediately.  Soon, I'm spammed with messages about cancelling jobs due to the goblin wrestler.  I look and look and look, but see no goblin wrestler anywhere, and no one's dying.  Soon, I notice that all of the new migrants are clustered around the drawbridge, but not actually crossing it, as if they're afraid to come inside (reasonable).

Turns out, one of the goblins had dodged into the small channel pit and so was under the drawbridge, but still visible and so scared everybody from crossing it.  As I ordered some marksdwarves to take care of the matter, I imagined that he was asking for tolls.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Upright spikes do zippo damage to creatures falling on them. The only thing they're useful for is hooking up to a lever.

or hook them up to a pressure plate marked for 7/7 water in a two tile room that has 6/7 and 7/7 respective tiles or some such nonsense?

Off topic I know, but I'm a huge Fallout fan. Is this mod worth playing?

Uh... what?

There IS a fallout mod of some sort, I think, but you'd be better off asking in the modding forum...

As a founding member of the Rodent Alliance, I should point out that rabbits are not rodents at all, bad-tempered or otherwise.  They're in Lagomorpha, not Rodentia.

Close enough that we let them into the Alliance anyway, though.
