[39e] Dwarves switching loyalties
« on: October 02, 2008, 06:46:08 pm »

It's an old version, so maybe no longer relevant- but a portion of my dwarves appear to have suddenly switched loyalties after a siege, massacred everybody else, and are now killing all immigrants and running in fear from their own newborn babies (which are comically attached to them).

There's a thread about it here

Your brewer must have made a bad batch of swamp whiskey.

I think another report was similar and included a save showing the problem.  That one wasn't nearly as funny though.

i had this with a civil war in a tantrum spiral beginning with the baron...
the cause of this is simply a stray bolt that killed one of your own dwarfs, the marksman is then a enemy of your fortress. if someone kills him he get an enemy too... etc. somehow dwarfs that both flagged as enemys wont kill each other, but shot at any other and get shoted (and through getting shoted they recruit new rebells xD)

"Elves!? Their men dont wear beards, and their women bathe nacked to lure you into the water and drown you. Thank Angrosh they are as ugly as the day and all big and skinny."

I didn't think dwarves could shoot each other; friendly fire only exists for siege weapons (and any elaborate deathtraps you decide to set up).

You're correct, and I don't think dwarves get credit (or blame) for siege engine kills.  It's probably an oddity of the entity code related to how tantruming/berserk dwarves become "enemies" of the civ.
