[40d] Caravan stuck at Depot.
« on: October 02, 2008, 02:58:16 pm »

I have had this occur a few times and I am not sure how to replicate it.  The caravan comes, trades, then the message that they are leaving occurs.  They just stay at my Depot.  I can get them to leave by deconstructing the Depot.

Has anyone else experienced this?  Possible causes?

As far as I know, "X have embarked on their journey" actually means "X are preparing to embark on their journey" - so that means that, when that message appears, their just starting to pack up their stuff, so you can't trade with them anymore. The more items they need to pick up from the depot, the longer it will take.

Yeah, I waited a long time before I decided I didn't want all their heavily armed guards to go crazy.

What's really vexing is that when they take a long time, there's increased chance of the mandate bug coming up where the ruler decides after the fact that the item you traded is forbidden. I once lost 7 dwarves that way... I gave away a bunch of crowns as offerings, the traders just sat at the depot. Once they finally packed up and started moving, the Consort decides the export of crowns is illegal. Unfortunately, I didn't think to set caravan death-traps, so they exited the map and he imposed sentences of 70+ days to every dwarf that had touched a crown on the way to the depot. I didn't realize that mandates were retroactive (I'm told that it's a bug that they are), so I didn't know to unequip my fortress guards of all of their weapons...

Note that if you deconstruct the Trade Depot while they're there, you'll effectively "steal" the goods they haven't loaded yet, which may result in diplomatic issues up to and including a siege if they're angry enough.

Hmmm.  Maybe I didn't wait long enough.

Perhaps the message should be:  The caravan is beginning to pack up.  Instead of they are leaving.
