Maybe it's me, but the name of this alligator makes it impossible for me to kill him. (It also helps that I savescummed and found my macedwarf can murder him with ridiculous ease.)

Just started the fort, have no cloth/rope and want to capture him as a fort mascot. Any ideas for getting him into a cage?

Also, it doesn't help my guys are afraid to go within 20 squares of the bastard.

Either build a cage trap on a spot he frequently roams across or bait him towards one via a sacrificial peasant.

Another savescum reveals that chasing him with a soldier and then un-drafting him gets me a fleeing target and activates the gator's desire to chase dwarves. Going to try re-assigning with the "ignore wild animals" setting and see if I can bait him into a trap.

Edit: I got him to go over it THREE TIMES, but it didn't trigger. Did I do something wrong?

I think you did. You tamed him, didn't you? Tamed animals don't trigger traps, but animals -with a name they got because they killed something and before they were tamed- will never stop killing your dwarves. So you either have to knock him unconscious on a cage trap to trap him, or kill him.

It's a 'resident' of the cave you're near. Critters that get named during worldgen (and regular play too actually) get shunted to a random cave and act kinda like resident megabeasts.

He hasn't even caught the critter in the first place, how could he tame it?

Also, the named critters being untamable is the result of dwarves/wardogs/etc. it hurt while wild remembering his hostile status and attacking, with the animal defending itself. If the critter hasn't harmed your dwarves or their animals, there should be no hazard to taming named creatures.

If he's trap-immune, you could try and build an enclosure of two tiles, two doors, and 8 constructed walls, like so;

╔══╗
^^
╚══╝

One cage trap, one single upright wooden spike trap. The idea being you poke him with the spike every now and then in the hope you'll do just enough damage that he falls unconscious while on the trap.

Alternatively:

Z+1
......
.++O..
▼+..+.
......
.++++.
......

Z+0, ground level
++++++
++++++
▲╔##╗+
+┼^^┼+
+╚══╝+
++++++
++++++

You build the wall with grates in the middle, build a ramp up, then a floor section above the corner, and another left of that, and finally a constructed wall. Both traps in the enclosure are cage traps. Then, once the critter is trapped inside the enclosure, deconstruct the second floor, dropping the constructed wall(setup insures the dwarf won't be standing on a part that will collapse if you do it right) - this should kick up dust that can knock dwarves, and hopefully animals, unconscious, and as your critter only has cage traps to stand on...  ;D

...or just lure him into an enclosure and leave him there with locked doors.

Does cave in dust travel through fortifications? You could do a small trap chamber and lock him in when he chases a dwarf. Then collapse a support closeby and have it faint into the trap

Last time I wanted a live alligator off my map (was the only creature) I just told the kennels to capture a live animal.  It was done almost instantly without complication.

Huh. I thought that only worked for vermin with Trapping.

I'll try some other approaches - chained cage traps, for one, and maybe the door method if he doesn't just ignore them. A pressure-plate support column bomb might also be in order.

Edit: SUCCESS! The door trap worked! Many thanks to all you kind sirs. All that remains now is a collapse-bomb to choke up some dust and Treemurder the Fortress of Spite will have its mascot!

It does. It was merely a coincidence the alligator moved off the map around the same time he issued that order.

Except that all my dvarves got happy thoughts when I installed it in my legendary dining room next to my kitten cage.

The trapper had the task to capture live animal from the kennels, showed it in the job lists, went out past my cage traps, and soon came back with alligator (I was too busy to watch that since all my dwarves were getting happy thoughts as they walked past the trade depot being hand filled with water (gave my liaison a few levels in swimming, merchants not so much)

Well, this is a bummer.

Have him caged, but he doesn't appear as tamable when I select "Tame a Large Animal".

:( Ah, well. At least I can keep him as a dinner table oddity.

Glad to hear the smoke bomb worked.

I just took a peak at the wiki, and it says alligators are [per_exotic], so you'll have to wait for a Dungeon Master to tame it.

Crud. I never get that far... I don't have the patience to put up with bullshit like "nobles" and "economy". I just want goblins to try to kill me all day.

The DM doesn't need the economy iirc, and, at least for me, they're not usually all that bad...
