Marksdwarves refuse to train at archery target
« on: October 01, 2008, 08:40:12 pm »

For a while I had only one military dwarf, a marksdwarf who got up to Skilled I think in archery. Eventually migrants showed up, and I drafted one of them and had the two begin training in wrestling. Since then, both dwarves stalwartly refuse to train at the archery range. If equipped with crossbows, they head to the barracks and beat each other over the head with them. I'm starting to think the new dwarf is a bad influence.

Anyway I can't figure out why they won't train. I tried removing the barracks, but then they just mope in their rooms or by the statue. I tried building a second archery target but they ignore it. I have no idea what the damn problem is. They're both champion wrestlers by this point too, so I can't demilitartize the bad influence dwarf.

Oh, also, the new dwarf (the one I jokingly refer to as the bad influence) vomits EVERYWHERE. All over the damn place. Half my courtyard is covered in vomit, I can't believe how much vomit this stupid dwarf has. Whenever he's not bashing things with his crossbow, he's finding a clean spot to vomit.

1. sounds like ammo shortages. only non-metal ammo can be trained with
2. cave adaption, i suppose.

It's neither of those. The bone and wood bolts are PILING up since there's no one to shoot them, and whenever they're not training in the barracks the dwarves hang out by the statue (which is outside in the courtyard) and vomit.

huh. i guess the second guy must have unhealing internal damage. second guy might also lack a quiver. no idea why they'd suddenly stop shooting, though.

Both have 0 injuries and are fully equipped. I'm going insane trying to figure this out. I've moved the archery targets inside, I've changed their size, I've unequipped their armor and shields, nothing.

Just for the record, nervous system damage doesn't prevent dwarves from practicing shooting, just sparring.

I really don't think 'Smiley' is vomiting from internal injuries. I've checked both of the dwarves multiple times for injury. I think he just vomits because he likes vomiting.

No, he's vomiting because he has cave adaptation. Dwarves who spend all of their time indoors will become nauseated by the sun.

Did either of the dwarves grab something stupid to carry about?  Have you tried turning on all job cancellations to see if there's something subtle invalidating the archery range?

1.) make sure there are no room overlapping the archery range
2.) make sure the archery range is facing the right direction
3.) if the marksdwarves are equipped with shields, try taking them off
4.) make a new archery range

Did you change your archery range setup at all? I've found this to be true:

Code: [Select]
  1     2     3
..... ..... .....
..... ..... .....
..X.. .XXX. #XXX#
##### ##### #####

In case 1, the only archery range is accessible.
In case 2, the two side archery ranges are accessible, the one in the middle is not.
In case 3, none of the archery ranges are accessible (# means wall).

In all three examples, all the ranges are firing north-to-south.  The wiki never mentions this and I can't reproduce it in my current game, but then again in my current game I don't have a solid back wall at my archery ranges.

I never knew that nervous injuries didnt matter to makrsdwarves, I thought it stopped everything. Oh well, crossbows are my new re-education route for brain damaged dorfs. Instead of sending them out with no armour against the goblins seiges.

You did designate the targets to be rooms right? and set them up in the right direction?
