booze consumption
« on: October 01, 2008, 05:38:02 pm »

does anyone know what effects the consumption of booze in a year?

apparently bringing 250 total booze with me wasnt even enough to last until the first caravan on my last embark...

also, how much do people usually take for booze on embark?

250 booze is MORE than enough to last for over a YEAR.  What exactly did you do with it, was it correctly moved into a food stockpile?  How many dwarves did you have?  Where did you embark?  I have no idea why 250 wouldn't be sufficient I start out with 200 and that's usually enough for several years.

If you reclaimed, then the issue might be with the more starting dwarves then normal (or if you modded to have more then 7 starting dwarves). Also, same stuff already posted, storage, cooked it, etc.

Finally, if you store the booze near magma, the barrels it was in might have been destroyed by fire snakes.

Also, bears will drink booze, but I doubt that's your problem.

7 dwarves, thats it.

i know, thats why i was scratching my head about it...   i shouldnt have run out that fast...

the only thing that may have contributed was i did leave them idling for a little while...   transporting the food and booze from the starting wagon to the new stockpile inside and i got a phone call and left the game unpaused...   when i returned, they had drank all the booze, leaving nothing but empty barrels on the stockpile

and this was just after embark, so i hadnt found the magma yet, and i had just finished moving it all into the base, and thats all that had been queue'd up.    after digging the main area for the depot, i move everything indoors into a universal pile before digging deeper and making specific areas.

While we're on the topic... what is the average consumption rate of dwarves eating food and drinking booze? On a yearly basis, let's say. This sort of thing could be extremely helpful for planning a fortress start; how long do you have to go before your initial supplies run out?

I believe I read somewhere that an average, healthy dwarf will consume 7 drinks per year, including children. Food is likely higher, I would estimate anywhere between 11 and 15 meals per year.

The drink average may be higher, since I recall reading that a fair number of versions ago, although I doubt Toady messed with drink rates for dwarves.

While seven drinks a year sure seems low at first, imagine a fortress with 50 dwarves, which is very easy to achieve. That's nearly 400 drinks per year, which is somewhat tough to manage until you get steady booze operations up and running and manage to get some decent brewmeisters. ;)

They drink more than they eat, actually.

I say again: are you sure you didn't cook it?

I keep wondering where/how the booze is gone in my fort all the time...
It feels kind of "The more i brew, the more they drink"...
And i as well had that feeling that ideling (or worse Patying  :-\) Dwarves do get thirsty a lot faster than working ones...

Still 250 is a lot of booze for just 7 guys. You must have had some kind of accident there.

From what i read, you didn't even had a Kitchen at that point. So yea, it wasn't cooked.
Maybe some "Wildlife" stealing booze after all ?

You must be mistaken here, or maybe refering to a older version.
As of now (0.28.181.40d) i am very sure that they drink (a lot) more often than they eat.
The amount of booze drunk is about twice (triple ?!) as high as the amount of food eaten.

As somebody else mentioned, there's some kinds of wildlife that like to steal booze.  In particular, Dark Gnomes have been really bad about this.  I recently had an early fortress die of dehydration in the first year because there was no reliable water source on the map, and Dark Gnomes guzzled all my Strawberry Wine (15), causing me to go from over 200 units of booze to zero in less than a month.

Check your event log, see if you see any records of something like, "Creature X has Guzzled Dwarven Rum (5)".  I'll bet that's what it was.

im not new to DF, i know about the guzzlers and such, while there were dark gnomes on the map, i had the I designated meeting place at the entrance blocking anything from coming in and all the booze inside.

i hadnt cooked it yet because i hadnt even set up a kitchen yet.

the only thing i can possibly figure is that they consume at a much faster rate if they are idle than if they are working.

anyone want to test this out?    vanilla embark, 200 booze, let them sit around and do nothing and see how long it lasts, ctrl-alt-del, use the automatic starting save and actually have them do jobs and compare?
