How did Toady generate the languages
« on: October 01, 2008, 04:51:25 pm »

I'm interested in how he did this - I'm positive he didn't sit there and think of all the hundreds of words in each of the four languages present in the game. Instead, it appears he used a random word generator of some sort, but one which lets you plug in certain rules (i.e., Dwarvish words can begin in a vowel but not end in one; they cannot be more than two syllables, they can contain ä and ö but not ü, (iirc) and so on.

So...I was wondering if anyone knew what this generator might be, or if he just programmed it himself.

I thought he just sat down, came up with a list of words he needed, and made up words. He probably had those kinds of rules in his head, but thought of random syllables that sounded "dwarvish".

I'm not sure EXACTLY how he did it. However, I decided I needed on for my modded races and programmed one myself. (It's in my sig). I do know that he made a core language file with rules for each word he wanted included, and then simply made a translation of each word into each of the four languages. I assume he wrote a program for it, but I suppose he could have done it by hand. *shrug*

I was thinking that he used a program because that would have taken FOREVER...kind of like the thing in this guy's sig.

Which looks pretty much like the kind of thing I was looking for incidentally.

It is quite clear what happened.

Toady bought a Dwarf off of E-Bay, who dictated the dwarven language to him and each words translation.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

He wrote a program to generate the words, and then edited the output by hand.

The original 7 dwarves from Toady's first test fortress were from Alabama.

I'm fairly certain that you can arrange for certain 'accidents' to happen to the population of your fortress, leaving only one male and female surviving dwarfs left. Play some mood music (or just give them some break time) a relationship will most likely occur.

Now, I've never done this before, because whenever I kill off my dwarfs (modded black dragon sieges are a good way to go) I'm at the point where I am just enjoying their blood pool around, and not attempting alternative re-population schemes.

Incest, rape, whore, and stuff like that are all "Untoward" which means that no civilization except goblins use those words in naming (unless modded in). Check the the names of goblins in the world history, a lot are vile.

Probably the same reason ditch and channel aren't in there.

I emailed him this and asked him this once, if I remember, he said he randomly generated them, and he had make it so it wouldn't generate words like shit and coca cola.
