Perhaps Super Strong individuals could carry larger weapons which would counteract the bulk of the size advantage
Well, strength is one thing, but if you are not tall enough you can't use two-handed sword - your arms are too short.

Well, strength is one thing, but if you are not tall enough you can't use two-handed sword - your arms are too short.

Yes it only works to certain extents or with deliberately created weapons.

-Huge breath, 23 squares.
-Fast
-Preys on anything.
-Diamond, Metal, Adamantite, Scale hide of protection.
-Flight
-23 tiles in size.
-Colossal headbutt (from the ground, to cause internal damage to fortress.)

23 tiles in size?  So....4.796 tiles on a side?

Catpaw: I would assume he took the square root of 23. I mean I could be wrong, but it seems like that is exactly what he did

On topic: I have always loved the idea of life cycles, especially for mega beasts like dragons. Having multiple stages of growth and development is an interesting idea, and adding tags to allow for modifications of life cycles for all creatures would just be fun. It would make modding more difficult, but the bonuses are just neat.
Now onto the actual on-topic part of the on-topic part. I think the one problem with allowing a user defined, or even raws defined growth will lead to rather static encounters very similar to the ones we face now. In the end your dragons (or whatever) will just be a set of values defined by the users. I can understand your desire to have a nice range of dragons so you can go and kill off the weaker ones, and working your way up to the largest. But in the end its just like killing off multiple different creatures with the name 'something' dragon. An algorithm for growth would be an interesting solution, but would be too complicated, at least I think it would be.

I know I'm not helping the discussion much because my post is kinda wacky and confusing, but too sum it up I like your idea!

No, just 23 tiles in a square.  Then again, my grip on mathematics is not very good - I just took a square with nine tiles, and added a layer of tiles around it, in hopes it would size up properly.  Let me double-check it in notepad.  Anyways, I wish I could conceive of a better pattern for the Dragon's Breath, to make it more unique than just being the size of the Ancient Dragon.

Huh, the Ancient Dragon adds up to 25 tiles in a square, actually.  That said, examination by someone who can comprehend numbers would be good.   Keep in mind, I didn't take height into account.

I haven't been taught about the squaring of numbers, but if I am interpreting the diagram correctly, that wasn't what I was aiming for.  Rather, I just wanted the dragon-sizes to increase in a way that made them exponentially larger than the size before without changing too much.  So the shapes I graphically shown in my last post was what I intended.  Unfortunately, when I was making the size calculations, I didn't use a visual reference.  It was only after someone pointing out the problems and me putting it into an understandable form did it click what was going on.

Well, I wanted to make the size of the dragons clearly show at what level of power they should be.  A one-square dragon is pretty pitiful when about the size of a dwarf, right?  However, I also wanted the number of squares to be reasonable as the Dragon progressed in size.  Going from one tile to 25 in a single step would be quite drastic in my opinion, which is not intuitive in my opinion.


That said, the number of squares is just to give an basic idea of what I was intending, not as a rule - after all, I didn't take Z-Levels into account, so it isn't complete.  Still, just establishing the idea of multiple tile monsters was the most important thing here, alongside the Draconic lifestyle.

Square is funky. I always pictured a long tail that swings about, knocking the nearby away, and a neck that comes out of a body which also sways to breath fire in the various directions. The central body I picture as 3x3.
