I felt this needed to be recorded:

In 52, the fortress Dreamdikes collapsed under constant attack from the goblins of The Malice of Carnages. In the final attack the already weakened defenders attempted to hold off six goblin brigades, and although they were accompanied by the local goblin leader, an accomplished speargoblin, it was the famed crossbow goblin Lirgesith Zottholatzul Zalis that lead the attacks. His name means Climaxincest the Unthinkable Glade of Wards.

After the goblin shattered the feeble defenses at the main gate and stormed the exterior courtyard, Climaxincest faced off across a long open space of farmland with the lone remaining defender, the skilled but moody crossbow dwarf Feb Tongschaste the Lonesome Dwelling of Bolting. Unfortunately, Feb wasted his first two shots killing some of Climaxincests squad. The goblin was not so distracted, and shot Feb through the heart. The civilians of Dreamdikes released the dogs (and cows and mules) into the corridors of the fortress, and grabbing weapons from previous battles, put up a valiant defense of the wounded, fighting from door to door through the residential blocks. They even managed to kill enough of Climaxincest's squad that, always cautious, he fled from battle, no doubt going on to become a plague of a new fortress somewhere. The remaining five squads proved to be more than enough to destroy what remained of Dreamdikes, unfortunately.

Of special note during the last battle were the actions of the dwarves Kivish Tradecradles, the stonecrafter, and Tulon Tradetold, the broker. Rakust Mechaniccloisters was the last dwarf to die - he was actually a mechanic, and was the only dwarf left as a civilian to care for the wounded when the rest of the civilians gathered for the final defense.

everybody loves a valiant final battle.

Im curious tho, did you decide going into it that, "this is it, I'm all in.  either they wipe me out, the resulting tantrums wipe me out, or I somehow win, but either way we are fighting this to the death!"

because I would think it wouldn't be too hard to seal up the fort in the face of such odds, or at least after the initial losses.

also are you playing without traps?

I'm not being critical, I'm just curious.  I hope my own fort stands up as well as Dreamdikes did.

I wasn't specifically going into this battle to lose, but I was specifically trying to play without sealing the fort. And yeah, no traps. I think I probably would have lasted a lot longer, but over three attacks Lirgesith cost me 10 marksdwarves total by hitting them through fortifications.

reclaim and go heavy on military in the hopes of finally taking that guy out  sounds like he'll make some lucky dwarf a hero.

or better yet, figure out what civ he's coming from and start a fort in thier tower, then lay seige to the goblins as revenge for the loss of Dreamdikes

Alternatively, start a dwarfy adventurer on a quest to kill him and avenge his fallen cousins of Dreamdikes.

Also, do note if you start a fort on their tower that a reclaim will clear the site, so back up your save if you opt to lay siege and, say, spawn atop a tower or something equally suicidal.

Not sure what abandon will do, if anything, if you revisit as an adventurer/etc. and don't reclaim.

Considering your topic title:

I always identify myself as a dragon online and in games, and my current fortress was named Dragondreams - randomly.  Further, I agree with the thought that the player represents the group mind of the dwarves in the fortress.  The group name for this fortress?  The Ancient Mind.  Again, randomly.

I *am* older than their entire world, really, considering I generated it about two days ago.

I think the game is stalking me or something............

Why doth thou scream at me?  :P

Comettower would make an interesting challenge - make a tower-fortress in the shape of a comet arcing across the map.  :D

Or excavate a [comet impact]crater and build a tower in the middle, atop a little hill.

I do say my good fellow, perhaps you use too much trappery.  Might I interest you in a low military training regime and an fairly open stronghold?

DAMMIT I WANT TO LOSE A FORT TO A BLOODY BATTLE

:(

Download my mod and grab the Frost Giants out of it. When they come to your fort to trade, kill them. Then they'll siege. Meet them on the field of battle. Watch dwarves go flying.

Good times. I've had quite a few forts ended by those guys.

Eheh I am also playing with a heavily modified game, plus I don't use traps and defensive mechanisms at all...I must say that sieges are pretty hardcore this way, I must maintain a big army all the time....but its challenging at least,  8)
I am trying to balance megabeasts somehow, SIZE:60 + slightly better damlock had no real use, 1 dwarf managed to solo a megabeast even with these settings...I might try out SIZE: 150+.
