bauxite can be found in sedimentary layers of rock, which sadly enough often does not occur with magma. i'm not sure if you have a sedimentary layer, but just look it up in the wiki and it will show you what rocks make up the sedimentary layer. If you don't have a sedimentary layer, you're going to have to do something drastic.

Heh. I think I only had bauxite in my fort once - discovered it exactly one level below a hidden magma pool I didn't know was there. In fact, the first bauxite tile was also the first warm tile indicating the presence of the magma.

Alas, I also had a magma pipe and had already set up my forges, doubly ironic as bauxite wasn't avalible to the world's civs, so I'd had to do without.

Wolfus Thoughts: Thats a much better thought out and safer but more complicated way than I was thinking of. Its still a way off though as I have to pump the magma up about 5 levels to do this.

I was going to just use the pumps as the magma on/off switch which is fine but I might chuck your way in as a saftey measure, especially as most of the components of it will be right there anyway.

Magma-safe pumps waste iron or steel, however, and you don't have to pump the magma up if you bring the trade depot down.

That's a common misconception. Pumps don't actually need to be magma safe. The side where the magma comes out is counted as a wall, and thus cannot be destroyed by magma. If magma touched the side where a dwarf would stand if it was manually pumped, however, the pump would be destroyed. But, the magma should never touch that tile anyway.

You can also use wooden screws and pipe sections, because the game doesn't simulate magma flowing through the pump - it just teleports it from one level below and behind the pump to the same level and in front of the pump.

Use a pump, yeah. But BEWARE, pumps pressurize magma! The magma WILL fill up to the level of the pump!

Here's a better idea, you send animals to the arena to fight with whatever you want, connect the arena to the trade depot, then open the connection, and see what happens, will the elves commit blasphemy, and attack each other, or are they going to die by animal rampage?

A lot less work, though the timing's a bit tricky. The only problem is that dropping the bridge flings them through the air;

You don't have to use raising bridges.  We have retracting bridges for that.

Man, I totally forgot the magma-safe rules... so THAT'S why the lava door wouldn't close again, the mechanisms melted...

Yes, the moat overflowed and yes, all the dwarfs died. Good times :)

The one and only time I found magma was at the bottom of my industrial channel for my metalsmithing. I didn't know what that was at the time, and I was like "The magma will melt that and my OCD will fine." Nope.

True, but I dislike bug exploits like that - they really sunder immersion.

6: Once magma has evaporated and the floodgates at 2 and 5 have been rebuilt and connected, upper water spillway access(3) allows channeling of the obsidial magma-plugs, restoring magma flooding functionality.

Thoughts?

There's no need to rebuild floodgate #2, as long as you don't have any giant mining projects going on to distract your miners it'll probably be about as quick to designate the obsidian plug for channelling as it would be to pull a lever and open them.

Also, the cistern can be quite tiny and simple. You just need one tile of water, you could designate the cistern as a pond and the dwarfs will fill it up in only seven trips. I think all of the initial splash of water will turn to steam instantly, so there will be very little left over to require an evaporation chamber for. The access corridor will likely be enough.

Otherwise, I can't think of any way to refine the basic concept any better than this. :)
