Making do without bauxite
« on: September 30, 2008, 12:47:32 pm »

Ok firstly: If I have no bauxite and none of the 5 (five) trade caravans that come each year can bring me any. Is there any hope of getting some without hacking? Is it acceptable to hack? (I am going with no unless I get convinced)

Secondly:
I am building magma death chambers for the elven traders. I want to have a wall of magma proof (nickel) floodgates attached to a lever. These gates will be closed after the elves enter the trade depot in the chamber. I am pretty sure that when the chamber fills with lava the mechanisms will break and I will no longer be able to open the gates. If the magma hardens and I can still access every gate from one side can I reconnect them and open them as normal?

Final question: Does the magma still harden when it is cut off from its source or will I have to also pump in water? and does every sqare of magma have to be touching water or will the hardening spread if there is one cooled square?

There is an alternative for your magma movement and control problems; Screw Pumps.  Also, closed floodgates are immune to melting worries, so close the floodgates, activate the fill pumps to flood the area with lava, then when done activate the 'drain' pumps that move the lava back to a holding pool.

Magma does not cool unless it 'evaporates' (1/7 will dissipate over time) or comes in contact with water, which makes it form obsidian.

You can use nickel and nickel silver. Ask the caravans for lots of nickel, some copper, and some zinc so you can stretch the nickel out with nickle silver (those are the ingredients). You need a bar of copper, a bar of zinc, and two bars of nickel.

lol, edit:

I just actually read your post. So ignore this, I guess.

But yeah, you can reconnect them fine with one side exposed.

You could use water, won't destroy anything useful left in the depot

I want to destroy everything in the depot, otherwise water is perfect. The reason I want to start a war with the elves is because they never bring abything worth having. Well at the moment they are still bringing cool animals for my arena but if they ever stop...

You could always take the animals and wood THEN burn them.

I've been stealing everything the caravan has that I want, and then, when they try to leave, dropping the bridge out from under them so they plunge into the magma pipe. A lot less work, though the timing's a bit tricky. The only problem is that dropping the bridge flings them through the air; once, one of the mules got lucky and landed on the edge of the caldera. After recovering from being stunned, it fled (and with any luck, reported to the goblins that my fort's a bunch of punks).

I could put up walls, but that seems unsporting somehow.

Couldn't you specifically request some bauxite blocks from your liason or the humies ?

And 5 Caravans per year ? How you do that ?!

Overall when embarking on a map with Magma taking some bauxite might be a good idea.
Then put them in a specially designated stockpile, and forbid them untill they are needed...
I usually take 30 - cost me 90 points, but this way i am sure to have enought to cover at least the most important projects.

A lot of times you can't request bauxite.

Really, I'm not sure what you'd need it for. Floodgates don't have to be bauxite to hold magma. And it's completley up to you if hacking is "acceptable;"...it's not us you're hacking.

You need bauxite mechanisms for floodgates. If the mechanisms aren't bauxite, then the floodgate can't close again once you've opened it.

You don't need bauxite because you don't need to open the floodgates to get the magma out -- you could activate screw pumps instead, which pump out the magma, and then you open the floodgates only once the magma is all removed.

Alternatively, I would not personally feel bad about modifying the raws so that there are several rocks that can withstand magma temperatures.  I can see no reason why the dwarves aren't allowed to make mechanisms out of iron, which would be magma proof, but seeing as how that's not allowed by the program, going with the substitute doesn't seem particularly far-fetched to me.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Oh yeah....forgot that. I test-ran my fuck the world machine after save scumming and it looked like the floodgates were getting swept away...

Something I just whipped up in notepad and paint. Graphics are mostly DF standard, so I'll forego a legend.

1: Outside-Floodgates are closed once traders enter depot.

2: Magma-Gate is opened, unleashing burnination and firey death.

3: Upper cistern is unleashed, sealing magma.

4: excess water falls into evaporation spillway.

5: With magma flow cut, floodgate to magma evaporation spillway is opened and delop chamber emptied.

6: Once magma has evaporated and the floodgates at 2 and 5 have been rebuilt and connected, upper water spillway access(3) allows channeling of the obsidial magma-plugs, restoring magma flooding functionality.

Thoughts?

I'd just like to point out that I've had at least 10 forts, and I've never seen any bauxite in any form, ever.

Yeah, I'm the guy who busts on a 12 in blackjack 10 times in a row.

Wolfus Thoughts: Thats a much better thought out and safer but more complicated way than I was thinking of. Its still a way off though as I have to pump the magma up about 5 levels to do this.

I was going to just use the pumps as the magma on/off switch which is fine but I might chuck your way in as a saftey measure, especially as most of the components of it will be right there anyway.
