I guess it's okay...but the whole thing with dressing up like vikings or something (not that any of these vids include such, but I've seen some...bleh) seems a little comic, people with often no connections to that type of culture trying to mimic it with speed metal... ;D

Anyone heard of Ayreon?

Not exactly folk metal, but the producer creates these amazing rock operas, with heavy metal elements + singing interludes.

From THE HUMAN EQUATION album, which gives a pretty interesting story about a man's journey through life.

And the obligatory wiki.

No.

No.

NO. If you're going to attempt to ridicule a genre of music, atleast figure out what the hell you're talking about. The fact that most/all of these bands originally came from the Scandinavian countries is more than enough proof they've been influenced by Viking Lore, especially bands like Amon Amarth (though they hold out it's not 'viking metal', but metal with Viking influence).

As you journey to the center of the world, feel free to read the death announcements of those dwarves that suffer your neglect.

One billion b-balls dribbling simultaneously throughout the galaxy. One trillion b-balls being slam dunked through a hoop throughout the cosmos. I can feel every single b-ball that has ever existed at my fingertips, I can feel their collective knowledge channeling through my veins. Every jumpshot, every rebound and three-pointer, every layup, dunk and free throw.

Amon Amarth  \m/,

Try to find pretty much anything from Therion's Secrets of the Runes album.  It has a good sound IMO.

Wintersun is freaking awesome.
Also, who takes Viking metal seriously enough to dress up like them?
I listen to everything from Bob Marley to Children of Bodom, from Red Hot Chile Peppers to Korn, and most everything that isn't rap and has a good sound.
If I dressed up like what I listen too, I would look like a explosion.

I'm sorry, you're right. I still think the idea is a little humorous, though. Nothing against those who enjoy it, and I agree that it would be appropriate to listen to while playing DF.

I would be wearing a dreadlock wig, a viking helm, spike bracelets and collars, hair down one side of my face, spiky on the other, rocker T-shirts, techno headphones, shades, tight and loose pants, and holding a sax.
Thats all I can think of right now.

Somehow, that fills me more with dread than anticipation.  It's like being told that someone's exhuming your favorite grandparent and they're going to try to make her into a cyborg stripper.

A bit of a necro, but can anyone recommend some good bands that have the style of these ones but are simply instrumental? I don't enjoy the singing as much as other genres. :-\
