Brook runoff - should I post this as a bug?
« on: September 30, 2008, 08:33:33 am »

Meet the waterfall on my latest fortress.

Oh dear. It looks like there's some runoff here...

... I pity any fish trying to swim through this.

So yeah. The brook walls are malformed around this waterfall, resulting in a dry brook and a huge, wide drainage off the map. It doesn't negatively affect gameplay, but is really funny towatch. (Salmon flopping around in 1 tile deep water to 2 tile deep water, teehee!) It could also very well be the result of a bug in how brooks are formed. Should I post this as a bug?

A bit late to ask permission for posting this as a bug isn't it?

Uh, no. I haven't posted it in the bug reports forum yet. This is dwarf mode discussion. :D

But it's posted as a bug.

Technically in the wrong forum.

If you wanted it to fit this forum you should have asked: "Is that normal brook behavior?" and not "Is this a bug?"

Taking hyper-critical pedantry to the next level I see -- nice work.

Anyway, I've had similar behavior once with a brook as well.  Also had a few underground rivers that ended up as half dry riverbeds but not because of malformed walls.

So I don't know if it's necessarily a bug, but dry spots on riverbeds/brooks seems to be reasonably common and doesn't seem like it would be something intentional.

Damn text only communication. People always find me as angry and rude.

I meant that if you think something is broken, no matter how much; report it as a bug.

Ohhh, okay. Sorry for misunderstanding. I'll repost this in the bugs forum when I get a chance!

Anyway, has anyone else seen anything like this?

I've had a brook that has only 30 tiles on my map. It starts at one point and then does a U turn and goes offmap.

I had something like this happen to me once, but it was with a volcano instead. The magma tube opening was a good many z-levels higher than my embarking location, but there were giant gaps in the mountain side so the magma was spilling out and very slowly flooding the world. Wish I'd saved that fort, doomed as it was.

I once had this awesome fort where it was a 2 Z level settup with 1 under ground river AND one above ground river thundering out of the cliff side flooding everything below- the amount of water was insane with 2 rivers supplying the flow. The best thing ever is having the magma pipe be 5 Z levels high and a series of caves underneath with a bottomless pit, which of course undermined THE ENTIRE THING causing a cave in the second i embarked. I dident know how to see above/below Z levels yet so i was happily digging when a tide of magma spilled down the cliff side filling my tunnels.

Not exactly related, but still a brook issue (and probably a fairly intentional one); I once embarked on an area that was basically best described as the frigid south, not having bothered to check anything the temperature (Magma! Water! Sand! Flux! Just no trees, I can live without those!). The brook started and ended on the same map, presumably having begun its flow in a time before time and suddenly freezing sometime shortly thereafter. I also had hell melting it, keeping it melted, and even getting a proper cistern working without it flooding my fortress due to the incredible pressure given off by maybe 30 tiles worth of running brookwater.

I had this occur, but midway through a map and around five zlevels up.  Single-digit framerates abound when you have 4000 gallons of water trying to fill half the planet.
