Possessed during bed rest
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:59:02 pm »

I'm a bit puzzled by this.  I've got a dwarf, a legendary miner whom I really need, who sustained major injuries to his leg during a goblin raid.  He headed off to his chambers, and spent a lengthy time at rest.  But not enough to heal.  Before his leg could un-mangle itself, he was possessed by a strange mood.

So he dragged himself across the floor and up several flights of stairs to claim a mason's workshop, then built one hell of a fine quern.  Most valuable artifact I've ever had, and among other ornaments it bears a picture of a bloated tuber fashioned of Gold, but I digress.

The problem is, now that he's done reifying the Platonic form of a quern, he's just lying there on the floor of the mason's workshop, doing nothing, making no effort to move.  He's not unconscious; he could drag himself away if he wanted to.  But he's thirsty, and I fear he'll die soon.

I tried putting other jobs into the workshop, on the theory that if he could kick others out, maybe others could kick him out.  But no dice.  My legendary mason just stands on top of him and builds coffins, neither of them feeling any dissatisfaction with the arrangement.

Is this normal behavior?  Is it a bug?  Should I write him off?  Thanks in advance.

If you have buckets they will bring him water, you could always try activating his military status and telling him to move to his room and see if that helps.

Most of my possessions and Fey Moods end in death.....damn shells!!

Perhaps you could build a bed under him and assign it to him. I, personally, doubt it will work, but it's worth a try if he got a legendary skill you need.

Excellent suggestions.  Even the military one that didn't work.

Spoggo (can I call you Spoggo?), your idea is completely stupid, but I believe in rewarding creativity so I'll try it.  If it works, you should change your title to "mad genius."  If it doesn't work, well, I was just kidding about the "stupid" bit anyway.  Well done!

Most of my friends call me "Spog" or "Spogger", but, really, anything's acceptable (besides spooge; please don't).

If you really need to, I suppose using Dwarf Companion (or whatever the program is that lets you teleport and heal dwarves) might work. I'd say it's justified, as you're the victim of a bug, and I wouldn't consider it cheating. Remember to savescum before attempting; those utilities can mess up your save, sometimes.

You should probably also report it as a bug, upload a save for Toady, and all of that good stuff.

Perhaps not a bug.  He moved a bit while I was deconstructing the mason's workshop; now he's dying of thirst on the stairs while haulers tread on him.  So I guess he's doing what dwarfs normally do, and I've wasted everybody's time.  Not that anybody here would have been off curing cancer otherwise, but still, mea culpa, and thanks for your help too.

So I'll keep the Dwarf Companion out of this, as I tend to complain when my dwarfs don't die anyway.

If you find a way to knock him unconcious again (without killing him) he should get resqued again (by someone who has healthcare enabled)

I can't help but feel it's rather beautiful. He knew he was going to die and crawled his way over to make one last amazing item; no wonder it's an artificat. If only it was inscribed with pictures of him dying :(.

It's funny you should say that, but what I should be doing is rebuilding a database that maps experimentally determined carcinogenic mutations in protein kinases to known structures as part of a human-annotated cancer research resource.  What I'm actually doing is reading the DF forums.

I've always figured that activating/deactivating dwarves triggers a new 'recover wounded' job, but i might be wrong.

Odds are your guys heading back to his bed, or to get a drink.
