sealing magma flows
« on: September 29, 2008, 05:41:15 pm »

what are the odds of turning magma into obsidian with buckets and the pond designation?

I know it seems pretty unlikely, but has anyone attempted/succeeded in this task before?

initial assessment is not good

i think if the flow comes from an infinite source (vent) you probably need to dump a whole bunch of water onto the lava all at once to have any chances of making obsidian and sealing magma off

Yes, water boils off instantly when dumped directly onto the magma, but you could build a pond somewhere above the magma, fill it at your leisure and then open a hatch or floodgate to dump the water onto the magma in one go.

You could Pond it ahead of the flow, though. that should stop it.

Someone mentioned in another thread that dumping a bucket of water onto magma from 2 or more Z levels up will work.

Or channel out one side of the pond, that's worked for me.

i tryed buckets... they don't work (magma was 1 zlevel below. never tryed more). filling a pond near and opening a floodgate/channeling (depend on how you built the pond) should work, but be fast

Yep - 2 z-levels difference between the hole you're pouring into and the magma will create obsidian.

I've just tried that and it didn't work - although admittedly I was pouring directly into the mouth of a magma pipe, so perhaps it only works on isolated magma?

Possibly, I know 2 z-levels always worked for me.  The dwarf dumps the water down 1 z-level, so if there's magma there, it doesn't count.  But if there's an empty floor, then the water drops down onto the magma, forming obsidian.  It's a difference between "oh, there's already magma there, so I can't add water" to "oh, there's water above magma, and no floor between it, so make obsidian.
