Legendary Goblin Endurance - aka "Is that all you got?"
« on: September 29, 2008, 09:33:51 am »

From the chronicles of fortress the Badrape, founded by the seven dwarves of Red Roughness.

Quote
Early Autumn 264 in Metropolis Asdosgunlel, "Badrape"

"Another vile force of goblins has arrived. They are 30 strong, headed by vicious elite goblins and divided into three groups. First squad arrived from south, they perished in the stonefall traps of the kitten-corridor. The second and third squads have headed for our main entrance.

The whole second squad triggered the pit-trap pressure plate and fell down to the pits of doom. Third squad demonstrated the cowardly nature of goblins by routing at this sight.

I have ordered all marksdwarf squads to the murderholes of the pit of doom to finish of the remaining goblin troop.

By the glory of Asdongunlel and the Red Roughness,
-Zasit Ilideral"

Late winter 264 in Metropolis Asdosgunlel, "Badrape"

"The Horror!

As ordered previously, our marksdwarf squads proceeded to execute the final remains of goblin intruders in the pit of doom. The slaughtered the goblins from safe distance. But to the marksdwarves great surprise, their leader didn't fall despite the constant hail of steel bolts!

Our marksdwarves have been stationed in the pits of doom for months now, leaving only to replenish bolts and rations. But the goblin, this Ôsbu Tuxôguksos, she just doesn't die! We've exchausted our entire stock of bolts, and our smithy is desperately forging new bolts, but the goblin shows no signs of perishing! A lone wooden bolt stuck in her leg is the only proof that the barrage is having any effect!

If the fell beast doesn't fall soon, we'll have to order the champions to the pit to finish this off. Already this goblin is having a huge detoriating effect on the troops morale - the peasants are whispering about spawns deamons and undead carp!

If everything else fails, I've received the authorization from the mayor to construct a ballistae battery in the lower pits. Engineers are also finishing the channels so we can flood the pits with water and drown the fiend. Hopefully a stray bolt ends this before things have to to come to that.

By the glory of Asdongunlel and the Red Roughness,
-Zasit Ilideral"

Yeah. So a siege comes in, and some goblins fall to the cheap pit trap trick. I order my marksdwarves to finish them off, and leave the game running while I do some work.

I return to the game after it has been running by it's own for  quite a while, to relieve the dwarves and to dump the goblin trash. As I select the marksdwarves, I notice that they are _still firing_!

Several months has passed, the pit is littered with bolts, and the three marksdwarf squads are still blasting at the lone goblin in the pit.

At first glance it looks like she is uninjured.

But a closer examination reveals her wounds... FROM OVER 200 BOLTS FIRED AT HER!

So either she has some serious dodging skills, or my markdwarves really suck. What do you think is the reason behind this? What will happen to my dwarves? Will they perish under this monster?

Switch them to wooden bolts and use it for target practice.

Also, definitely keep the skull trophy.

They are already firing wooden bolts... I ran out of steel to forge, and nobody volunteered to fetch the bolts from the pit ;)

Any quesses on why the goblin has managed to survive so long?

No idea. I recommend uploading a save and making a bug report for Toady to check out.

Her stats:

Ôsbu Tuxôguksos (Sternsteals), Goblin Spearmaster
Strong
Unbelievably Agile
Extremely Tough

Her inventory:

*Iron shield*, Right hand
*Iron shield*, Left hand
narrow giant mole leather tunic, Upper body
narrow horse leather robe, Upper body
=narrow Iron chain mail=, Upper body
*narrow Iron chain mail, Upper body

So, maybe it has something to do with the dual-wielded shields ;) Some speargoblin is she...

Can goblins level up armor user and shield? If so, she's quite likely legendary in both by now :p

She's walking around with two iron shields.  That might do something to the crossbow bolts flying her way.

I can't stop laughing at your fortress name + group name.

I... I just can't. Perhaps a giant siege bolt, ramming into her? That way any future goblins will be mowed down by the siege engines.

I say you keep her and make her try her luck against megabeasts.

two shields + 2 chain mails + 2 leather armor underneath.

She's well armed.

It's about time the goblins learned to use multiple shields too. Next thing you know, we're gonna get seiged by goblins holding ten shields on one arm.

Soon some group gets the bright idea to have a hundred shields each. Then you merely need to construct a bunch of siege engines, and let fly.

Because it will take the better part of a year for them to approach your fortress.

Can siege engines hit prone creatures? I know it's hard to do so with normal crossbows...

just use simple cage traps and drop them from cliffs, or make an arena for your marksdwarves to shoot em in... easy
