When my Bowyer builds the... bowyer, he never leaves. I try all I can do to get him out. I tell him to build a crossbow out of wood, and he say's "Nope, can't, need wood."

When there's perfectly good wood just a few levels away.

What do I do?

Btw, there is only one way into my workshops. And they are enclosed on all sides. That's how I do it all the time, and it always seems to work.

And activating him does not work.

The left side of the bowyer's workshop is impassable. You need to make an entrance or deconstruct it.

The left side of the bowyer's workshop is impassable. You need to make an entrance or deconstruct it.

What he said. When placing a workshop, the dark squares are impassible by dwarves. For example, the jeweler's workshop's right side is impassible.

You probably should have posted this in questions first, but not a big deal.

If nothing else, the buildings show which parts are impassable as a dark green square in the light green layout square. The wiki also has layouts of every building displayed on the building's page.

Feature suggestion: make it actually impossible to place a workshop build order if there is no way out afterwards.
(In practice such a check might be a bit expensive, I dunno, but it would be nice to avoid this kind of newbie confusion.)

Alternatively, instead of making the dwarf stand in the middle of the workshop when he finishes it, make him stand on the perimeter, like when building bridges. Then you still have an unusable workshop at the end, but at least the dwarf in question isn't trapped.

It's still be strange and confusion if you built a workshop and it doesn't work for some incomprehensible reason, though. :)

I like MMad's suggestion. Once it's designated to be built, run a check and say "This workshop would be inaccessible" or something.

My usual way of solving this problem is to make my workshop rooms at least 4x4, and putting the workshop in the corner away from the door. That way there is always a way in and out. As well as some small stockpile space in the room for highly desirable materials.

I make them 6x6 and can cram three into a room if I need to (butcher, tanner, leatherworks, and a 3x3 refuse pile that accepts leather as non-refuse.

I believe that's called having a baby... So, clearly, there's some complications with the pregnancy.
