When are tunnels biult?
« on: September 28, 2008, 11:45:27 am »

I know dwarves and goblins sometimes biuld roads between their sites in mountainous areas. And that this can sometimes lead to tunnelling, but more often than not, when searching for tunnels (IE embarking on the "road" tile in fortress mode) I find nothing, not even a hint of a road or tunnel. But I do see bridges are still biult over brooks, indicating something has been biult, but where are my tunnels?

All advice/help/information welcome

Um.

They're UNDERGROUND.  You have to dig for them.

READ THE POST BEFORE ANSWERING

I said I clearly saw surface bridges that led to nowhere, indicating neither road nor tunnel.
Its either the road, tunnel or bridge thats bugged.

And it could well be the case that the tunnels are hidden until you break into them, but why then are the bridges biult on the surface???

The bridges on the surface are likely a bug of the way the road-code works.  I'd wager that your tunnel is directly below those bridges.

Often the roads are just dirt, and hard to see against the landscape.

As for tunnels, I haven't visited one in-game but I know they're pretty buggy and can be unusable or unwalkable in many cases.

I really wish that tunnels would exit into a plaza in an underground fort, making them more integrated into the layout of the forts.

I could see lines of the landscape clared of boulders, could this be the road??

Also Draco, I dug out an area of every z level beneath the bridge and nothing, i was expecting "You have found a tunnel" message or something.

Bear in mind also that this road was "brown" on the world map, I dont know what would happen with a "white" road

The white roads behave exactly the same, except its easier to see them. (theyre paved), and seem to never tunnel, despite terrain.

I think tunnels show as black or something on the world map.

Dark gray, yeah. I don't really see the point in looking for them because nothing happens yet.

It would still be cool, if not useful, to have them. Also, they could function as a way to offload water from the map if you don't have a bottomless chasm. What would be really awesome, however, is if caravans appeared through tunnels. A *completely* sealed off fortress.. now that would be fun. If Goblins could siege via tunnels... can anyone say chokepoint?

Tunnels are only found on mountain tiles, but sometimes dwarves will make roads that cross over mountains as well.

Brown: Dirt roads.  You found a dirt road here then.  No buggy behavior.

White: Paved roads.  You'll find strips of + (floors) across the map.

Dark Grey over mountain tiles: Tunnel.

Do tunnels show up on a default world map? Or do you have to activate this in some way.

Also, where as your points are valid and useful, it doesnt explain what triggers tunnels in the first place

I don't think so.

There's an init option for showing tunnels or not.
