Nostalgia Fort, Using Old 2d Version [23_130_23a]
« on: September 28, 2008, 11:03:27 am »

Ok, here goes.

We've all played DF through and through.  We know how it goes.  Z-levels, roadless wagons, hills, valleys, endless farming, the whole works.

Ha!  No.  This game is using the last of the 2D versions.  That's right:  No z-levels!  Build roads if you want useful caravans!  No FPS higher than 50!  Reflood farms every year!  Flooding rivers!  Magma!  Demons!  Guild representatives!  Dangerous depths!

Anyway, rules are similar to Boatmurdered.  One week from the posting of the save for you to take your turn, or you are skipped.  We revert on unfixable issues, like world floods and massive tantrum spirals.  Feel free to steal ideas from places, hell, a lava cannon wouldn't really be a bad idea.  No cheaty crap like huge long bridges to kill demons, but you can magma the chasm if you want.

Also no mining Adamantine.  We are trying to survive here.

I'm taking names for starting.  Be aware that you only have a week to FINISH your turn once the previous guy finishes.  If that doesn't sound like something you can do, then don't sign up.   Also be aware that you need to not kill the fort.  Feel free to toss in your two cents on what sort of starting equipment we should take.

Notably, there has been a minor rule change due to skippage:
Also new rule:  You need to post an acknowledgment of your turn within three days of your turn starting.  That will help against wasting a week on a complete no-show.  Anyone who doesn't post at least "Ok, I've got the save now" or something akin to that will get skipped for no-show.

Something useful: http://archive.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Main_Page  That's the old wiki.

Strike the earth!

oh, Sign me up.
I still remember the old days when you couldn't farm in the winter and you couldn't make rooms bigger than 7 squares wide or long.

one question only, were do we get the old version?

On the DwarfFortress site, click the "Downloads" link.  Then, scroll down to 23.130.23a.  That's the one we're using.

Also, you are signed up.

Gonna need more response than this to justify even starting a succession.

I would love to get in on this, but I just don't have the time.  Don't worry about interest though, there are a lot of old fogies around here who would love to see a fort from the good ol' days show up.

Just try changing the thread title to something a little more catchy than the version number.  You'll get interest.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that 6x6?  7x7 or greater would cause a cave-in, I believe.

7x7 or larger would cave in.  But 6x100 would be perfectly safe.

This is going to be brilliant.

Is it okay if you are hilariously inexperienced? Because I'll join if that's okay.

A flurry of responses!  Good.

Ok, so seems like we have enough of a crowd to kick this off.  I'll be starting probably tomorrow, though I'll admit that I'll basically be running off the old wiki's starter guides.  I don't know the 2d version all that well, though I've played it a bit here and there.  Any advice?

Also:  Yes it's fine to be inexperienced.  I know exactly crap about the old version.  It's just neat as an exercise.  Also it's neat because I haven't seen a 2d fort in a while.

Sign me the hell up.  I've wanted to do exactly this since I joined the forum.

Also, I know absolutely nothing about running a fort in 2D, and I'll apparently be taking over in year six, after everything starts going to hell.  This is gonna be great.

I've never player the 2D version, and by the looks of things, a fair number of people here haven't either.

Sign me up. Sounds like fun.

signing up! i like the 2D version, but am not really all that good at DF, especially starting forts.

Glacies, you must have your guy go nuts and do something totally paranoid and bizarre. IT IS YOUR SACRED DUTY AS PLAYER #3.
