The best defense
« on: September 28, 2008, 12:46:41 am »

isn't a good offense, or a strong defense, but an army of drunken, depressed dwarves. I'm trying to make a trapless fort, and thinking of ways that, without slaughtering my enemies in the process, i can give my dwarves the edge.

Does anyone have any good defenses to this end. I was thinking of setting up a floodgate system in my entrance that would allow me to change it from a 3 wide straight hallway, into something that would make large numbers (and more importantly archers) useless. How do other hardcore players defend their bases?

I've found that just a small amount of dwarves who do nothing but train can take down an awful lot of threats. I'm going to have my army un-activated from now on once they're decent at their skill, and just do work, because training constantly makes them strong enough to handle any siege I've seen yet and take down a dragon with only the loss of an unlucky marksdwarf.

Having nothing but a well-trained army is the most hardcore route. I don't know what else you mean by that...

A few legendary dwarves with excellent-quality weapons and shields can take down nearly any threats by themselves. Legendary shield users with mastercrafted steel+ shields can face down entire mobs of goblin bowmen without going down, and even better if you can make your fort entry narrow (4 or less squares) and take a corner, then set your dwarves stationed around the corner in the event of sieges or ambushes.

Personally I'm also fond of crossbow towers; build some 2-3 z-level towers with their only entrance underground, and some fortifications on top. A few groups of decently-trained crossbowdwarves stationed on top of them can pick off a lot of enemies from great range.

i know what you mean by the crossbowdwarves, once i had about 4 or 5 marksdwarves slaughter everything in their path with just a few fortifications.

basically i guess i was just trying to come up with ways to prevent archers from wiping out my guys, but a couple of turns in what will be the path to my base should take care of that. Last fortress my crossbow dwarves did so much damage that i think i'm going to stick with all melee this time, no traps. Next fort i'll probably learn enough about modding to make the sieges start super early. I know i've read something about that and it seems pretty simple. Anyone else got any hardcore limitations they like to implement on themselves. I've already got a no plump helmet rule going, it seems to have just increased the amount of food i have, though made it slightly less fluid.

Marksdwarves [+ construct fortifications for them]. They will destroy everything in the vanilla game.

A wall of arrows or a corridor of blenders would make any hostiles wish they've jumped down a chasm instead

How to stop arrows:

Code: [Select]
XXXXXXXXXXXX
_dDDDDDDDDDg
_dDDDDDDDDDg
XXXXXXXXXXXX
Where X = wall, D = door, d = dwarf, and g = goblin.

Also, for morale, don't underestimate a good dining room.  It's often the difference between a tantrum spiral and happy dwarves after serious battle losses.

My favorite method: squads of wrestlers, and a corridor-of-death series of drawbridges.

The only reason I have an army is to watch over fey-mooded dwarves in the event that they go berzerk.

As far as invasion goes, I simply pull the switches and let the poor gobs fall to their doom in my carp-lamprey-pike-sturgeon-infested river.  I made the corridor long enough to buy myself more than enough time to hit the triggers.

Its so true, all my dwarves are all giddy with my legendary dining room!! its just like 8 tables and chairs with smoothed walls.....epic

Not quite. Fleshless enemies (Bronze Colossi, for example) are extremely resistant to piercing attacks. That's why it's always good to have a decent squad of hammerdwarves or macedwarves.

moderately skilled wrestlers do  just as well, if not better vs colossi

something to do with : [sever on break]

that means breaking a colossi joint breaks it off entirely, and it won't regenerate quick like trap wounds

If you don't mind a few bridges, walls and some lever work you can lead your oncoming seiges and beasts to a pre preprepared arena.   Then you just re designate your meeting area to an overlooking room and unleash your legendary dwarves into the awaiting hordes.  The enemy will get a few shots off, but what's a battle without some challenge eh?

I find I actually prefer this tactic to cage traps or shooting galleries for flavor reasons.

Im going to pretend that it isn't far too easy to get legendary fighters:

Making a network of towers and walls with ballistas in the towers. Make sure they have a good stockpile of ammo.

Connect the towers together with underground passageways and leave no surphace entrances except your main hall.

Remember that if you block off all paths the goblins will stop moving and just mill around. Set it up so that they mill around in front of your ballistas.

Think towerdefence wc3 mods

I really hope toady nerfs training a bit
