Operating system of choice?
« on: September 27, 2008, 11:16:12 pm »

The question is fairly simple. Mark the operating system you use the most! I have a feeling there will be a higher proportion of non-windows users here than on most places on the internet.

As for me, I use Linux. Fedora 7, as I'm way too lazy to switch to one of the newer versions of the distribution. I run DF under wine perfectly fine, with no problems. I dual boot windows, but I rarely ever use it.

Feel free to discuss the operating systems and their merits, but please try to keep away from a flame war.

I use Linux, but I'm too lazy to put Wine on it. I play DF and go on these forums with a striped-down Vista. It's cumbersome, but there's no way I'm paying for XP.

I use not-vista and not-mac.
Since my dad installed it, and it is not vista or mac, I use XP.
Had it for over a year.(Close to two now?)

Vista's what came on my laptop, so it's what I use.  Honestly, I don't see why people are so against it.  Sure, the memory usage is quite significant, and being asked to confirm when running software can be annoying, but it's not horrible.

QFT. People bitch WAAAY too much about Vista, and it's only worsened by Mac's trolling commercials. We get it Mac, you find flaws in Microsoft's operating system. I don't give a flying fuck.

Not that Microsoft's new ads are much better.  They're so pointlessly heartfelt it's insulting, like a parody of campaign ads or something.

I use XP myself, because I like games and I'm lazy.  The way it tries to handle all my firewalling, installation, and security for me is pretty frustrating, but what else would I do.  If I had the option, I'd be running 98, just because it needed less fiddling with and seemed more stable (filtered through the eons since I was last using it).

It doesn't matter what you think, vista is still a shitty OS compared to anything before, except maybe ME.

Vista is pretty resource hogging, but my computer's handling it pretty fine.

Other than that, most other issues with vista have been fixed or will be before MS leaves it for Windows 7.

If I had a choice I'd dual boot XP with ubuntu though. Later on I may ask some of you pros how to set up a linux distro on a desktop.

I dual-boot Vista and Linux.

I spend more time on Vista, but only because I've had it longer, and it's set up exactly the way I like it. I've still got some ways to go before my Linux installation is the way I want it, but I may still end up uising Vista once it's done, mostly because WINE isn't as compatible or as stable as I'd like.

I use Vista, and I don't see any major problems with it, compared to XP.  It does take up a good bit of RAM, but since I have 4 gigs of it that isn't much of a problem, and turning off the fancy graphics for the desktop seems to have cut down usage even more.  Only irritation is how it seems to break some games saves when you have them installed and don't run them in admin mode, but that is avoidable.

Vista! Vista! Vista!

On the contery to popular belief I think this OS is better than old XP. Reason being? It's incredibly shiny. And thats _ALL_ that matters. Plus it has some neat features.

Dear sir! How dare you call this pretty beast 'shitty'. Its alot better than XP imho. Yeah sure the It _does_ take up alot of Ram, but when you have 4GB's of it... who cares?!

AH. I only get 1.5 GB of the Random Anti Mammoth, so I use XP.

I prefer XP over vista mostly because I don't want to buy vista, when I rarely get onto windows anyway. The only time I do is to play the rare, obscure game that doesn't work under wine. I wouldn't mind trying out vista, if I could just upgrade it for free with no hassles, but I think I'd like to try it out first because of the bad rap that it's been given.

I've dealt with OS X before, and it's nice - I enjoyed the terminal a lot. It's too bad the windows command line isn't anything like a good BASH terminal; I might like windows a lot more, then. However, OS X just isn't for me. I just didn't like the feel of the operating system, overall. Not really sure why...

 Lets see...

6 total gigs in my C drive? Yup, I believe this thing can only run XP. Thus my OS of choice.

 224MB of RAM? Ouch.
