Challenge fortress - Samurai Fortress
« on: September 27, 2008, 04:36:27 am »

Just an idea i had from reading a thread about modding in japanese stuff.

Make a feudal japan styled fortress!
- Military dwarves only allowed to use swords or spears. This includes the hammerer, he can use his fists though. There should never be more speardwarves than swordsdwarves in your fortress.
- No chainmail or leather armor, only plate. Leather boots are ok.
- No shields.
- Military failure should result in ritual suicide, depending on the severity.
- No weapon traps, they are dishonorable.
- Cage traps can be used, but those captured must be released unharmed with everything they came with (barring previously missing limbs of course).
- Snatchers and thieves will always face death, an exception to previous rule.
- Royal and Fortress Guard ranks should always be as full as possible.
- Same as above for the Sheriff.
- No nobles may die in 'accidents'. Legitimate noble deaths should result in ritual suicide for members of the military, especially fortress and royal guards.
- No jail should be built, all punishment should be physical.

Bonus points for modding in katanas and samurai style armor (with reasonable damage/damblock).

I think that covers it.

So, what you guys think?

Weren't crossbows quite prominent in feudal Japan? Or am I thinking of the Chinese? Anywho, shouldn't bows and crossbows be allowed.

You guys are thinking about the chinese (about the crossbows, specially the automatic ones).

However, the japanese military in feudal times did use spears as well.

As far as i know swords was to be used by the warrior caste and the plebs was using yari, a long spear, or bows. there are also the polearm naginata. I think only the torso would resemble a platemail as the samurai armors was more like banded mails or linkmail with some chainmail mesh binding it together.

I love the concept of ritual suicide for the royal/fortress guard if they fail to protect their charges. I just can't think of anything ceremonial enough though. I mean, it's slightly hard for a dwarf to kill themselves in a way that doesn't involve falling / magma / lava. Really, I'd like to have a dwarf impale himself with a spike trap...

Perhaps you could put a lever connected (indirectly) to a spike trap via water + pressure pad to make a time delayed spike trap? Pull then walk onto the spike trap?

We need wall mounted traps!

Oh, wait. How do crossbow in weapon traps work? Could you use them?

unfortunately, the same way as any other weapon trap. I rather dissapointed when i found out i cant make a long corridor with full crossbow traps at the end.

though the katana is iconic, it wasn't essential for the enterprising samurai.
Just like vikings didn't all use the daneax, and pirates didn't all use cutlasses. With knives clenched beneath their teeth. And parrots.

But it's SAMURAI fortress. It's supposed to be as iconic as possible, thus the limit to swords. I don't like the idea of whole armies of speardwarves with no swordsdwarves in a samurai fortress.

It's up to the player to decide the method.

Oh, i forgot about the Sheriff. And bonus modding points. Added to OP.

Let me see here

"- Military dwarves only allowed to use swords. This includes the hammerer, he can use his fists though"
-Samurai used other weapons... in fact I believe most didn't use Swords. (There is a long history of Samurai and Bows)

"- No chainmail or leather armor, only plate. Leather boots are ok"
-What? Samurai have no access to plate armor...

Ohhh I see now

Alright what do I think? Well overall I think your using common perception of Samurai learned by those who never really look deeper. Which is alright since it means it is stylised rather then accurate, but it will annoy me to death when I'll hear about how "Accurate" it is at a later date.

So I guess what is up next for you is to have a "Ninja" Fortress

This may go without saying, depending on play style, but military dwarves should also have a firm grounding in wrestling.  Samurai practiced various forms of grappling and disarming techniques, just in case they lost their swords in battle.  Some of these were adapted into the martial art of Aikido.

Firstly, dwarves can't use bows in fortress mode. If they could i would have allowed it.

Secondly, yes it is meant to be thematic, not accurate. Stop harpin' about it.

Thirdly, i hate naruto and similar types of 'ninjas'.

Fourthly i'm pleasantly surprised at the amount of traffic in this thread considering it's short existence.
