Hey, I never knew that woodcutting created noise. That means that if somebody's chopping wood 7 floors up, some precious noble will complain about it :|

Anyway, 4 squares is a lot when you consider it's vertical (if you build vertically orientated fortresses). That said, if placing any furniture causes noise, and the bedrooms will frequently be under extension as more dwarves arrive, is there even any point in avoiding more noise?

I'd say the best way is just to work out on your own how you like your forts set up. It also depends a lot on the shape of the map, placement of resources like magma, streams, etc.

Also, just dig down a bunch of z-levels, maybe all the way to the bottom, to make your bedrooms - or put them on the side of the map you never use anything else for. This can help prevent disturbed sleep by noise.

Wow, thanks for the excellent post, TantiaTope. I really like the design, and it even included the solution to my barrel problem (cooked meals have no barrels). However... How much work does it take to create such a thing? And do you have enough room for all of your dwarves, with only 3 floors of 16?

And thanks to everyone else, as well.

I usually have all the space dug out before the end of 1st year, making my miner legendary in the process.
The rooms get furnished as the migrants come in, and the workshops are set up progressively. For example, metal industry and syrup cooking don't commence until the second year, when I can devote a migrant to exclusive threshing, or four smelters to produce bars.
Three levels of 16 rooms can house 48 dwarves. For populations larger than that, just add extra room levels between the storage levels and the lower industries. Alternatively, turn a four L-room section into a barracks, which can sleep through overlapping sleep cycles about 8-9 dwarves sharing 4 beds.
A more challenging but fun option is to build twin but separated towers with 50 dwarves each, and pit them into a civil war... ;D

Thanks a lot; last thing: You don't happen to have your fort up on that mkv25.net site, do you? A full look through it would really help.

Overlapping floorspace does smash value, but shared walls do not.
Overlapping rough or smoothed walls doesn't affect value, but engravings only increase value from the side they are engraved on. So for a situation where you are engraving all walls and wish to increase room value as much as possible, double-walls are good.
