I've got a new adventurer who's currently sneaking his way along a road between two human cities.  Mostly doing it because it gives me a nice, clear path for sneaking practice, but it's also just neat to go between cities this way.

Anyway, at one point, I pass a party of elves going in the other direction.  Nothing strange there.

...except that about half a screen later, the road is covered with a dozen or more large roaches.

*sighs*  Silly hippies.  You could have just kept smoking, I wasn't going to tell anyone.

For those who don't get it:

"Roach" is a slang term for a marijuana cigarette.
Hippies were known to smoke marijuana cigarettes.
Elves are referred to as hippies.

I didn't know you could encounter parties on the roads, either. I gotta try this.

The idea of elves lighting up a twist of waterbugs is even funnier though.

Yeah, apparently it is. Learned it through an older friend who's been in the US and has been around too many hippies.

And to be even more precisive, a "roach" is actually a marijuana cigarette or "joint" that's almost burnt to the end. I guess I'm old enough to know that. There is a scene from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" where Hunter S. Thompson is a attending a drug-conference, and the conferencier explains that the reason why the marijuana-ciggarette-butts are called roaches, is that you think they look like a roach, a living bug, when you are under the influence of the drug.

Maybe your adventurer had been hittin' some of that.

But, about these wandering parties you encountered. Isn't that supposed to be part of the caravan arc, or at least the military arc? Or am I wronging?

They're probably migrants or refugees. That's the first bit of Toady's current to-do list, and (currently) the only completed one so far.

I'm a teenager and I know what a roach is. It it some American-exclusive thing? A lot of people seem not to be familiar with the term.
