Having somebody help out with the coding is the fastest way to make me feel like I'm working a bad job.  I'm still holding up pretty well mentally (my own opinion, anyway, he he he), though there are certainly things I don't like about the setup (none of them new, things like forum squabbles or irritating-to-reply-to emails, that sort of thing).  I think my worst days just come from not drinking water in the mornings or something.  I'm about half as good at taking care of myself as I was when I had the math job, and even then I wasn't impressive.

As a programmer, let me just say this:  You're doing an awesome job.  Seriously, I am eternally impressed by how well you slog through the unpleasant tasks and somehow keep going, week after week, month after month.

I'll admit, when I'm running a fortress and it gets down to ~10 FPS, I really wish I could look under the hood and tweak this thing so it ran faster.  And I think there are probably a few people out here (I'd like to think I'm one of them) who could help you with the things you're not good at without cramping your style.  But whatever you're doing seems to be working, and I wouldn't want to put that in jeopardy.  As long as you can keep at it, you don't really need anyone else.

Well said. As also someone with a little professional programming experience - damn man, every time I've gotten half way into coding a game I've run for the hills screaming. And I would _love_ to make a game, it's just... yow, what a project. So, you know, props muchly.

Since we are talking about Toady's dedication, please do not forgot to donate. The last month was quite horrible for Toady regarding donations -> September Donations: $1695.48

Really? I am not even working, and you wouldn't believe that how much money do I earn / month with poker and safe betting at average.  :)
I don't want to brag of course, all I am saying is that 1600$ in a month is not much, Toady deserves much more.  8)

That is 3 weeks WITH WEEKENDS each month. He just delays the weekends.
Also, he works very long hours.
Just think about it, would you really want to do that?
At least I think that is it.

I have a solution, take this girl I know (who lives in Silverdale) out to dinner and perhaps you will be rewarded with some 'stress relieving activity!'  She really is very friendly and even has a masters degree! ;)

We don't need Toady to make friends with The Golden Itch.

Actually as a correction...

It is 3 weeks a month without weekends JUST for Dwarf Fortress

The 4th week is for everything else.

Um, Its actually how ever many weekend days that there are in the month's worth of time on the secret project at the end of the month.

You know, this made me rather curious as to how much Toady makes per hour.  So, I did a little math:

Assumptions:
Toady works 8 hours a day (probably he does more)
Toady works 5 out of 7 days (weekends are excluded but the exact number depends on the year)
A year has 365 days(we're not talking about leap years here)

Total donations for 2007 and 2008 (up to this point):
$42917.85

Donations per month (average):
$2043.70

Approximate daily salary:
$83.99

Approximate hourly salary:
$10.50

It's higher than minimum wage  :).  He still only makes 24.5k per year  :(.
On average, Americans make $19.29 per hour and $41,231 a year.

Yeah, we've mentioned my untimely demise before, most recently because this town has lots of drunks

Art imitating life no? ill never look at those human towns in the same light again.

I got a raise this month so I intend to give the Toad one as well once the paycheck arrives.

Nooo! Girls kill productivity! Forced celibacy without distractions for Toady.

Also, girls might take it the wrong way if you describe them as "very friendly".

Ahahaha...but it will happen one day that Toady will find the "perfect girl" [if theres a girl like that at all  ;D], and DF's development will slow down after that point I guess.  :D
