Hint Hint, Easy Mode Lake Fortresses.

Find a brook, enlarge it, channel out the level under the lake, and Make Glass Floors. Build your fortress under the glass floors.

Yeah but i was thinking like 15 Z level deep lake fortress not 1. The idea of a sprawling fortress at the bottom of a deep lake is friggin awesome- pure glass tile ceiling and the brook running over the roof of your fortress with 4-8 flood gates on the side to completely flood the top once your done. The stone worrys wont actually be that bad to if you just do wide area channeling because you could keep dropping all the stone you mine out unto the next level down so eventually when you build your glass ceiling you'll have multiple Z levels worth of stone sitting on the floor in huge stacks. I already import huge amounts of wood if i just pushed it up for every single caravan i could make vast amounts of potash for clear glass blocks.

To avoid losing diplomats who often come in at retarded areas you could pave the single remaining tiles at the edges to ensure no trees grow. The main problems are ensuring enough expansion space while also making sure you dont get to much not to mention the nightmare of the friggin magma pipe(channeling into pre-dug tunnels going down multiple Z levels would allow you to safely funnel magma but ensuring you dont breach the tube is hard). The winter freeze with sieges will be hilarious because where i am atm it only lasts for a very short period during winter so entire armys will get caught on the ice which will melt hahahahaha, but seriously they can swim which could be annoying if only i could import carp! you wouldent be swimming then!

you gave me an idea;
one make a tower of 3x3 others send him in pm tour par tour the blocks/ terrains(a 3 case template from a precised Z level) they move away but none knows what others have taken.
if one ask for a thing that alredy have removed by someone lese no problem but you can't re ask what you alredy removed ...
so what you think would you like that meta-game?

So i found a 2x2 area with magma/flux/river and i've begun to prepare it for mass flooding, all rooms have walls around them so i can mine around them and isolate them to prepare for removal of surrounding dirt and stone. I have begun to completely hollow out the lone 4 Z level how hill on the map and stuck all the bedrooms in there- going to make a giant outdoor balcony overlooking my lake. I plan on going down atleast 8 Z levels with the bottom being covered with clear glass blocks and the magma pipe being a giant support hehe. The freeze seems to be impartial since i'm in a fairly dry area so i dont think the lake will freeze over but i plan on making an indoor fishing area just encase.

What kind of fish dwell in deep lakes? would i get carps and such migrating?

This is awesome i have a 8 Z level deep partial moat which flows through my fortress(river trade anyone?), i made doors into most of the moat construction into my walled off rooms haha so beware the doors! they might lead into a multiple Z level drop or be holding back thousands of gallons of water! I had a dwarf step into the doorway to let the press go by and this huge flood of water squirts through the door causing everyone to panic. 2x2 forts are awesome i have to expand upwards and downwards to make room now and ambushers get really really confused on the hill because they can prolly hear everyone right behind the walls.

An easy way to clear out multiple Z level channels is mass upward ramps because they can make a ramp from above/below/level and you can quickly convert huge swathes of area into deep trenches. I want to make an underground lake the entire 2x2 in width to see what kind of fish it attracts.
