What qualifications do dwarves use to choose their mayors?
« on: September 24, 2008, 10:07:29 pm »

I can't seem to see the rhyme or reason to who they elect.

I think they may choose to keep/change their current mayor based on their happiness; if they're happy, they keep their mayor, otherwise not.

It would explain how my mayor has only once lost the post before getting it back, and that was right after a devastating siege that killed a couple of popular dwarves a week before elections.

When they do elect a new one I think it's at least partially based on the number of friends they have. Better relationships == more votes.

First they see if the mayor candidate drinks vast amounts of alchohol.

Then they vote for him.

How is THAT supposed to narrow it down?

..Actually, my mayor is female...

And nobody has -ever- since come close to being less than ecstatic, with the notable exception of military dwarves and their families.

And, oddly enough, babies.

Social skills.

I lost one of my Marksdwarves to the dirty political machine.

Just like in real life - dwarfs elect the useless, the idle. All of my mayors are planters, gem setters, milkers etc. Which is all fine and dandy, no big loss if a tantruming dwarf cracks their skull ;-)

I've noticed military dwarves who do awesome things get elected occasionally.  I had a marksdwarf more-or-less single-handedly stave off an ambush by several squads of gobs, and he was immediately elected.  The previous mayor had just been beaten to death by goblins.
He was mayor for several years, and then a different champion marksdwarf was elected.

I'm almost certain it has something to do with the level of social skills. Your biggest socialites should be the mayors of the town. May also be based off of friends, but the highest level social dwarves typically have the most friends anyway.

Babies and children are just super happy all of the time. I once killed three brothers, two sisters, both parents, and about thirty friends of one child in an attempt to create a tantrum spiral, and the child only moved from ecstatic to content. All the other dwarves who knew those killed all went insane and were tantruming at miserable after about the tenth dwarf friend death.
