Actual conversation (Talking to the elf Shopkeeper Rayali Senamanemo):

Zurko Asothratpin, Maceman: Let's trade.
Rayali Senamanemo, Shopkeeper: You should probably try a shopkeeper.

er, where am I supposed to find one O_o?

You have to be in his shop to trade with him, since Elves don't build (last I checked) he has no shop, so you can't trade with him.

Try a human shopkeeper, see if that works.

Try a human shopkeeper, see if that works.

Well, I'm in some building - his house?

Attempted to travel back to human territory while typing this post - was ambushed by wolves and died. And I'd killed a unicorn earlier. :(

You can recognize shopkeeper buildings because they'll have the items lined up along the edges.
