 While it has been a few months, I remember only two freeware transport sims on the interwebs. One is free, but so complex and fragile that it is just not worth it, the other a mod for the Chris Sawyer game. Thus to play the second, you need the original game. Unless that has changed.

 Which I hope has happened. I freakin' LOVED RCT.

 And from what I can read from Wikipedia, you need the original graphical files to play it. I will continue research on this, because I really want to play it.

On Windows:

        * Quite simple, only a few steps:

       1. Obtain a copy of Transport Tycoon Deluxe for Windows or DOS.
       2. Note down where you installed/unzipped the game.
       3. Get the windows installer for OpenTTD from the downloads page.
       4. Double click!
       5. Tell it where to find your TTD files.
       6. Run OpenTTD.
       7. Marvel at the splendourificatiousness of the welcome screen.

    There are, of course, other (longer) ways to perform this installation, this is just the easiest/quickest route. (but if you took the longer route... would it increase the route income?.. or should you wait for monorail... ..)

 I note there is italics on the word Obtain. Does this imply... nautical thieving?

There is ongoing work to make OpenTTD independent of the original game files. There are quite a few excellent vehicle and building packs avaiilable that puts the game onto a whole new level of win.
