May get in on this... Though, I wonder, what's the difference between this and Chris Sawyer's Locomotion? It seems like the exact same game (especially because, know, the whole Rollercoaster thing)...

Chris Sawyer made Transport Tycoon too. OpenTTD is an open source remake of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, and has evolved beyond the original game a good bit (the addition of solid internet multiplayer support for one). Locomotion was basically Sawyers' attempt to redo TT gameplay using the Rollercoaster Tycoon engine.

Ah, gotcha. I take it that it wasn't as much of a popular hit/is outdated compare to OTTD, because this thread isn't about Locomotion? Then again, it's probably about OTTD because Locomotion isn't abandonware yet, I believe..

Yeah.  Inflation is bad.  At least make it tiny if you can.

2% the lowest it goes, I think.

Which techmically means, assuming I haven't totally misunderstood what is going on, that technically 4% inflation is less severe. Apparently income inflation is about 1% lower than cost inflation, which is as given. So it's 2%/1% vs. 4%/3%.

I always thought that inflation was equal across the board, though, so...

Okay, I might try this thing again.

I found it odd that the main purpose of the game is trains. I think it would be neat if you could build highways and such.

EDIT: oh yes, my main qualm with the server I did play on: people would join, make a company, then lock it immediately, and keep it locked after they left so eventually nobody could play.

You sort of can now (dual carriageways with the one-way roads option), but road transit is still pretty pathetic.

I want the base set...because that is what I know and love.

Also, I think it's because I don't have the latest version of OpenTTD. Is our server up right now?
EDIT:
Every time I join, it downloads map, then locks up, and says: Network-Game Connection Lost

Ozy, do you mean you don't like that you can't play other people's companies? Or just that the number of slots for companies would fill up? If it's the second, I should be checking this thread more often now (and I get email updates for new posts, but not edits) so just leave a note that the number of companies have maxed and I can either delete defunct ones or increase the cap. There should always be room for new companies, though, since I think I set the limit to 16.

Quinnr, no idea what the problem is, but it's entirely possible that the current map's just been going too long. And it definitely has, so I'm gonna do a fairly spur-of-the-moment map restart at about 8:30am EST (40ish minutes). Base train set and industries are the plan, but I'm going to try and get a bunch of islands on the map so the terrain's interesting. I think I might try and turn inflation off too, if I can find the setting. I found the one to change the percentage, but that's already at the lowest (which as Charmander noted, may end up being MORE severe, depending on how it actually works).

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Oh I suppose I should mention that I have the savegames for each of the maps we've played, so if anyone wants them, just let me know. I only have one save file for each, right at the end before I stopped the server each time, but they should be good for looking around and seeing what people did/how they did it if you want. I'll try and host them somewhere and put up links after work today.

I'm leaving my company unpassworded, and encourage others to join it if they want. Don't waste money, don't simply join to steal money, and leave plenty of signs for others.

I have a single trainline getting a decent profit, although it isn't much.
Any others joining the company are encouraged to build, although until profit is at least one million per year, please don't waste anything, and even then, keep wasted money to a minimum.
