What processor/internet speed would a server require to be decent?
Logged
To exist or not exist, that is the query. For whether it is more optimal of the CPU to endure the viruses and spam of outragous fortune, or to something something something.

Do you have a computer? I bet it can be used as a server, no problems. Seriously, I'm sure the requirements list CPU speed in MHz. Network speed, likewise. I wouldn't recommend dialup, but I'm sure almost everything else would work.

Hmm if I trusted my internet to be up consistently I'd set up my old desktop as a server. Actually I might do that anyway. I'll post if I do.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Bay12 server with low amounts of resets could turn out pretty cool, actually.

Thanks to this ancient thread, I now have this game and the upgrade.  It's not terrifically difficult, expect for the atrocious pathfinding on road vehicles.

So guys, guess what? I got my old desktop up and running with a copy of windows, an internet connection, and a dedicated OpenTTD server. Just connect through the standard multiplayer internet interface in the game.

It'll pause if there's no one connected, though, so use it! I may have made the map too big, but that just gives us more room to build. So... go go go.

Well this is fun.   :P We've got 4 people going so far, but there's room for 8 more companies if people still want to join. And there's still way more than enough space for people to get started.

Spoiler: so I built this. (click to show/hide)

I've never actually played before, but I got on. I made a company, but I'm called Player and so is the company. How2nameswap?

Would have played more, but my connection kept spazzing out.

I wanted to control THE ENTIRE ISLAND as well.

I'm currently downloading OTTD on the only net-connected computer in this house. Here's to hoping it will be playable on dial-up. Oh, how I miss college.

Well FredEx Shipping is well on its way to being a transport powerhouse.

Is there a way to tell if other people are on the server with me?

I don't know.  Duke wants me to stop playing mafia.
That's the sign of an abusive boyfriend, Toony... you don't have to listen to him.

I THINK the only way to change your name is to log in again and change your name in the upper right of the window that pops up when you click multiplayer.

...my connection kept spazzing out.

Yeah that's a shame, I don't know why. No one else seemed to have that problem.

I think it might be ok. I don't really know how it'll end up working out, but I kind of doubt there's a lot being transferred.

If you click and hold on the company icon (the character portrait looking one) one of the top options is client list or something like that.

A couple of notes: when you make a company, check out your company profile and give it a password if you don't want anyone else controlling it. Also, I don't think there's an easy way to tell if someone's just idling in the game or if they're active, so sorry if I'm on but not responding. I think you can see a bit of chat history by hitting the `/~ key (next to 1 and tab on my keyboard) to bring up the console (you can hit it again to close it).

Uh oh. Eduren and I are in there now, so it's still up. The basic procedure for me is Multiplayer -> make sure the upper left says internet -> make sure your name's right in the upper right -> click Find Server at the bottom -> sort by server name -> find the Bs, login. If that's not working... I really don't know.
