There wouldn't BE a game balance issue if it only took one metal bar to make a chair. Because there already are restrictions on the amount of metal: It's rare, and it's expensive. You don't need to also limit what you can make with it so artificially.

I don't know what game some of you guys are playing, but in my DF a suit of armor takes three bars and melts into one bar.
Maybe they're working from the point of view of adamantine.

Back on topic, I think I'll go with the "detailed statues" suggestion.

(Lurker having his say)

I'd like to either use the manager priority system on the job screen or combine the two (Move stone to stockpile 45 87x). That way I wouldn't have to draft my leader to make her trade. I could also move neglected jobs higher than, say, moving the spare beds around.

I'd also like to second the pause options if we can expand it to allowing pause on/off for each category of notice, that way I could set it up and go make a sandwich, assured that everyone won't ignore something important or stop for something stupid. For gods' sakes I don't need to know you've found yet more alunite! Half the damn level is alunite! Oh good, you've found loam, thank goodness my guards are kept awake by a cook two floors up but can't hear the F#$+!&@ kobald fighting the war dogs in the hallway!
Oh...Sorry, I'm back.
I am, however willing to change my vote to an arc-skipping small touches release with things like this and having miners check around them before leaving, etc. i.e, anything where he can duplicate code or call subroutines, maybe a good chance to clean up some code?

As for the metal loss, I could see goblin iron being inferior, and smelting it reducing it's mass by removing impurities. It would also make the armor weaker, or it could have worse covering from scavenging or bad design. I think Toady said he was going to make a shoddy quality system for dabblers and such.
Also, I can see items made from native gold or whatever as having value, a nice stone chair with veins of gold running through it...

My small thing request would be for the text menus to scale with a larger than default GRID setting.  I love having the extra real estate when playing the game, but wish the text-only windows would scale with it.

One small thing:

Either make marking a thing for 'melting' generate a job at a 'smelter' like it is with a 'butchering' and the 'butcher' and 'tanner' shops, or make them all manual.

Inconsistent high level abstractions confuse and frighten me.

Small thing? I'm all for the statue descriptions too.  Easiest thing that'd add the most flavor, in my opinion.  "This is a bronze statue of a dwarf raising a warhammer.  This statue represents [dwarf name], legendary Champion of [fortress name]." or "This is a gold statue of a dwarf and a goblin.  The goblin is dead.  This statue represents the siege of [fortress name] in [year]."  I guess those two would also have to have slight tweaks to the way histories are recorded in engravings though.

Rain/snow collection barrels! A great way to get a small amount of water in biomes that otherwise don't have any. A full barrel could have one tile's worth of, say, 7/7 water. You could set up a specific zone for dwarves to set out barrels to collect rain/snow.

I'd love to see grouping of engraving descriptions, so as there could be massive murals depicting a series of events, like a battle or a year of history of the fort, etc.

It would be nice to have a furnace, for instantly turning meat bags into bone sacks.  Less rot that way, you know?

Sticking bones in a furnace probably won't net you very good results after, and burning corpses wholesale is going to leave you with a nice mess to clean up, more likely than not.

8x16 text (with proper text for all the accented characters)
16x16 tiles (with e.g. a picture of a bucket for û)

Getting a readable aspect ratio on the text is more important than using two different tilesets - I could live with it just being the same tileset squeezed into smaller grid cells.

I'd like the ability to mass-select in lists.

That way I could highlight a bunch of dwarves at once and then activate them, or a bunch of <narrow iron low boots> and then melt them. It'd be especially handy with the trading screen, so I don't have to go through all the left-over goblin clothing one by one, hitting enter each time, to get rid of all the useless junk my siegers leave behind for me.
