I'm with Styrre on this one.  I'm a bloodthirsty maniac regarding the life of anything else in the world, but I love my dwarves.  They live like kings; even the lowliest peasant has a 3X3 room with plenty of furniture after the first year until the economy kicks in.

Plus, I don't have the greatest computer, so it's a choice between setting the popcap at 40 (and it realistically being 75) or running the game at 2 FPS.

Yeah, I go for the popcap every time.

I bet this wouldn't be as much of an issue if Pie didn't have such a disgusting avatar.
all avatars like that should be forbidden ... or we could just say that moving avatars are not permited ... However yours Neoskel scared me for longe time until i found that it is not 2 scary Halooween face but two birds ... (really for first look it is hard to find out ...)

There's a huge difference between a scary avatar and a disgusting one. I can stand people having scary avatars, but disgusting ones shouldn't be forced on people who don't want to see them.

As you probably know, i want people to see scary faces in my avatar.  :P

I never realized until this minute that those were owls and not grinning skulls or something.

Come now, I think that if I put in the effort to make an avatar like that I should at least have the freedom to use it. Also, the game we are playing has some of the most gory damage models possible. In fact, I have heard that the original slaves to Armok had a far more detailed damage model: Things like skin and flesh were simulated when calculating damage.

I'm not going to say that I'm HIDEOUSLY OFFENDED or anything, because I'm not, but that icon is in pretty poor taste I think for an avatar.

Believe it or not, you two are the first people to complain about this avatar to me. Also, it could be worse...

And I don't get how you can call my avatar poor taste when a hell of a lot of the appeal of DF (at least for me) is the black humour - having a diplomat have his leg torn to shit by a Cougar, chasing after my perfectly agile leader for about a year and then finally cornering him at the top of a very tall tower under construction. And then my leader removing the floor from beneath the liason's feet. And then the Liason falling 20 z levels and exploding on impact.

Oh, and could we perhaps get back on topic. If you want to make a post about my avatar I at least expect you to contribute.

For every people who complain about something, there are often another five or so who feel the same way but do not care enough to mention it.

I do find it disconcerting, to say the least. However, I've seen worse.

THANK YOU. That's MUCH better.

See the thing is, reading about it and seeing it explicitly laid out are two entirely different things. That's part of why it's a good thing that DF is in ASCII, it's not all that explicit. Seriously, hitting someone so hard they fly into a wall and blow apart is way funnier when it's just little 2s than visualizing it. It's funny because it's so ridiculous, not because it's blood and guts and dying.

As per your request, i'll say something on topic now.

Whenever you change something in the init file or the raws, you're playing a slightly different game than people who didn't make the same changes. Thats why it seems like cheating, which is when you 'play a different game' by changing something. For example, it's cheating in sports to use steroids because you're not competing with your natural strength while the whole point of sports is to pit your natural strength (and endurance, agility, etc.) against other people. So you're playing under different conditions. It wouldn't be cheating if everyone was required to use steroids for that sport (not like that'll ever happen in real life).

I guess that's also why people might take offense at being told to change something in the raws or init to solve a problem, you're telling them to play another game. It's like asking for strategy help in Age of Empires and being told to 'play Empire Earth instead of that stupid game' to use a pretty lousy example. (No i don't know what lice have to do with it.  :P)

To each his own; I was expecting to sift through seven pages of awesome ways to kill dwarves, and I was greeted by cynicism and aggression. If you'd rather not kill your dwarves, don't make me sift through several pages looking for new and awesome ways to kill my dwarves. Please.

I find the best way to kill immigrants is to send them down the 'other' tunnel. Which is a 1-tile wide hallway with many, many, many spikes connected to an automated (though somewhat impractical) automation device, consisting of two pumps which continuously cycle water between two different pools. It's somewhat slow, but it's humorous to see a large quantity of dwarves suddenly explode over your spikes.

Just for the lulz: Click me!

and in avatar form:

Would you guys have fewer objections to this? It is just a visualisation after all (I mean, technically my current avatar is just a visualisation...).

I have to agree that it is a distracting and slightly disturbing avatar, but on topic:

I just recruit all the unwanted dwarves into the military and station them (they have no weapons) near that pack of wolves :D
