My experience playing as a modded Dragon.
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:21:18 pm »

Yeah.
So, I was screwing around with the raws and decided to go play Adventure mode as a dragon...

Take 1: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Incredibly happy because my mod worked (this is my first mod ever). Have to turn off the game after 10 seconds because I had to do something else.

Take 2: Spawn in a human town. Kill a nearby crossbowman. The building I was in (Mayor's house?) immediately gets swarmed by guards. I get shot. I die.

Take 3: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Proceed to kill all nearby hippies Elves. Kill about 5 civilians and guards. Get attacked by bowmen. Die.

Take 4: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Proceed to a nearby Goblin Tower. Start slaughtering everything in sight. Kill about 40 goblins (mostly children :o). Get over-exerted and watch as my mighty dragon gets the living shit slowly beaten out of him by 2 goblin children. A goblin (cross)bowman comes and finishes me off. I die.

Take 5: Complete dragon overhaul:
Increased damage for the main attack
Added a second main attack with high damage and [BURN] property (pathetic attempt to simulate fire breath)
Gave him a pair of wings and the [FLIER] tag (I didn't know you can fly in adventure mode!)
Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Go wander outside and play with my upgraded dragon. Go kill some dwarfs at a Mountain Hall. Quickly run before any crossbowman show up. Go inside a human town. Spawn in a mayors house. Try to exit. Dragons can't open doors...*facepalm*.

Yeah...That was fun. Post your amusing stories here too.

I played a dragon once. Killed every giant in the area. ;D
I retired him in a human town, and he became a dragon recruit. Awesome. But I had my next adventurer attack it, causing a conflict of loyalty between the dragon and the townspeople. He immediately chewed my face off.
I had to read the rest from post mortem combat logs, but its pretty much what you'd expect. Dragon eating people, guards attacking everyone defending themselves against the dragon, and in the meantime, the new recruit is burninating everyone in sight. Not bad, until he catches himself on fire and dies.

Dear original poster,

Do you think you could post the raws for your dragon race? I'd like to play around with them in adventurer mode myself, and I'm afraid I have no experience modding.

Sincerely,
Concerned

Add the [CANOPENDOORS] and [INTELLIGENT] tags to the dragon entry in creature_standard.txt. Add
Code: [Select]
[ENTITY:DRAGON]
[CREATURE:DRAGON]
[INDIV_CONTROLLABLE]
to entity_default.txt and then generate a new world.

Sometimes, when my Dorfs are exceptionally stupid again, I wonder what exactly the [INTELLIGENT]-tag does.

[INDIV_CONTROLLABLE]

I seem to recall siteless civs causing infinite rejections during world gen since Toady updated world gen/entities (about the same time he introduced religion, IIRC).  I guess that's been fixed?

I believe that just makes them usable in adventurer mode, instead of turning them into a full-fledged civilization.

It used to act that way back in the day, but there came a time when it changed.  At least it appeared to.  I did the same thing I'd done before but the game kept hanging during world gen until I either removed the entity or gave it cities and such like the standard entities.

If it works (again) now, that's great.  I rather enjoyed being able to stomp around as a giant without introducing a giant civ.

It works, I've done this with a hydra. I've done the whole get shot by bowmen, get stuck inside buildings without [Canopendoors] and I even jumped off a cliff expecting I was big and tough enough to survive it. I was very wrong.

Well, if they don't have the [CAN_CIV] tag or one that implies that, that shouldn't be a problem.

I was playing a bronze collosus and jumped down 2 z-levels from a keep, because I didn't want to have to use the stairs. Died instantly.

I wonder what kind of legends there would be about a quadriplegic colossus(?).  Probably a lot of biting off of ears and such.  Doubt it would last long, though.

If you were to fall from the Keep with sever on breaks, wouldn't the ground be littered with broze colossus arms/legs/brains?

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)
