A basic ballista arrangement, and my first tower was made, and is awaiting for some peasants to occupy my arrangements.

16 floor 50x15(about) limeston block tower. all floors are wooden.
started but not finished. i am building third floor at the moment, and trees on the map aren't many, and dwarves take only few logs per year (human luckly have more logs)
i will keep working on this for a simple reason: i am building an aboveground fortress, so that tower is the only house of my dwarves. and i must also be fast, because they really need a bed and a dining room. at the moment i have only the barracks and 2 tables in the meeting hall. for 3 years (or more).i have more than 90 dwarves.all this while dwarves kept being killed by goblins.
and luckly, they are all happy

yknow whats really weird about this game? its how the death of a dwarf can sometimes FEEL so bad. Compare it to a similar game like rollercoaster tycoon. on there you just laugh if someone dies, or you think more about the cost of the coaster.

I've had two mayors die by siege, and a baby was just snatched, and bled to death in the goblins bag before the mother could turn around and fight. shes gonna take a while to heal i think..

I've almost completely pumped the water out of the effected parts of my fortress, after my get-the-cave-crocodiles-out-of-my-underground-river-access-without-flooding-my-fortress plan had a double failure in it's preparations, and as a result, was only half successful.

so it became... get the cave crocodiles out of your underground river acces while flooding your fortress?
that seem quite bad.

My current fortress (7 dwarves, no farming) I have a waterfall falling down 5 z levels through two giant rooms that will one day be either dinging rooms or a dining room and a barracks, and then down through the workshops and the tomb of the mighty fortress builder (my miner). I also have a massive cistern and plan to set up a high pressure fountain outside. My map has a cliff face with a small round hill outside so I think I will turn the hill into the fountain. Does anyone know how high water under pressure will go into the air?
I am also building an arena which is going fine but its not epic or pretty enough I think I will have to construct something over it but Im not sure what.

I have a big-ass moat. Three large pillars connected by bridges form the entrance to my fortress. The third and final pillar, being the largest one houses the trade depot. Fortified positions overlook the final pillar, and I can send my marksdwarves there should any invaders get past the two first pillars (wich are trapped to hell). I am currently errecting new watch-towers on the outside with underground passages into the fortress. I have placed them in the areas that goblins like to linger in when I raise my drawbridge. I feel, that with the completion of the towers, my fortress will be easilly defendable.

My simple attempt to pump, powered by windmills, magma from a pipe ended badly by a mason burning to death. Nobody told me pumps pressurize magma. I was under the impression magma was clunky and wouldn't flow up, always and without exception.

At any rate, it involved two windmills, couple of axles and gears, a pump and a long channel half across the map. One of the gears was connected to a lever for easy deactivation.

Nothing amazing, but first time I use machines, really.

I'm making just about everything out of steel, got a great place to do it in. I'm not going to go paste the walls with it but any constructions, furneture, the roads (which will be outlined in gold and platinum), ect.

My last project was going to be a giant castle in a giant-er room deep beneath a mountain valley.

Sadly, I was eventually forced to cancel the project due to the constant forest-fires from those damned flaming manta rays (don't ask), perpetually unhappy dwarves due to the constant deaths of woodcutters and hunters, and complete and utter FPS failure.

I did finish the aboveground entrance, though, which was a huge tower with the civilization's symbol (waves) on the front in gold blocks. It was also hollow, so I could fill it with marksdwarves as a first line of defense against the elven menace.

As for DF projects in general, I'm also working on a mod (which may have been made obvious by the presence of the aforementioned fiery doom fish) that I'll probably release shortly after the next major DF release.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Whoops, it's actually a watchout for my initial base, my real base will be completely made after I can construct the Ocean tower, and flood the region.

And I was always tempted to shoot the ballista, which is put in the line of fire of the dwarves inside either of the many work places I set up.

The scavengers didn't come for my food when I got rid of all natural rams withing 20 squares around my unguarded food, set up many doors, got a hunter that has crossbows, three war dogs, and scares every single kobold in the area.

My animals ALWAYS get stuck in my tightly shut doors, NO MATTER HOW MANY THERE ARE IN A ROW!!!
