2. Carve around it with channels.
3. Carve the last channel with a single dwarf from the outside.
4. Massive cave in.
5. ???
6. PROFIT.
Guess I should have followed these steps. I was punching a closed pit open, by channeling the tiles on the level above (that is, TWO levels above the pit itself). But my miners decided to undermine each other, simultaneously, causing this tiny little ledge they began channeling on to cave-in, punch through the pit roof and all 3 miners fell into it :DD

I would have loved it if I could do that to a standard cave system.

I remember someone making a succession fort based on this idea. (or was it community?)
It was the Chasm Challenge fort.

It was a succession fort.  That one petered out due to updates and some REALLY terrible lag, so far as I understand it.  I had given up well before that after a huge goblin siege walked right in through a hole in the wall the guy before me had left during a renovation project.

It wasn't me!  I think it was the guy after me, before you... Some things about the fortress were pretty fun.

I quit because one of the other dudes with a turn before mine tried to boss me around and micromanage my turn, then had a little hissy fit when I did my own thing.. feh.

You'll have an easier time than we did, if only because of continuity of leadership.  I attempted to use our self-destruct switch only to have it fail due to other folks' constructions, for example.

I did get that working eventually, but no one seemed to care :-\
