Building A Tower In A Bottomless Pit.
« on: September 18, 2008, 12:00:52 pm »

See above. It will be seven floors, with various retractable bridges for exploratory mining/cave monster squashing. Strongly considering a self-destruct switch in the event the fortress is overrun by a siege. Am I crazy, or just brain-damaged?

Have you considered the possibility that these two are not mutually exclusive; You may be both? ;D

I remember someone making a succession fort based on this idea. (or was it community?)
It was the Chasm Challenge fort.

you are crazy. if i were you, i would make more than 7 floors.  i would make several buildings each one more than 1 z-level high and connected by bridges, a city made by these buildings that goes from the deepest hole to the ground level.

but if you want a tower, make it more than 7 floors. at least, that is my opinion.

Yea, this site is actually having some problems... namely, I didn't set out with a stacked mason-miner party, so I only get about half the stone (if that) for the space I mine out, which is a problem since I need metric fucktons of stone to build a tower from scratch.

I only chose to make it seven-level because there was a nice, wide shelf all the way around seven levels down, which I thought would make it a nice staging area.

Also, considering installing a 5x5 or greater trapdoor-bridge at the topmost floor so I can drop invaders/immigrants/traders to the bottom floor and pick up their splattered remains.

It was a succession fort.  That one petered out due to updates and some REALLY terrible lag, so far as I understand it.  I had given up well before that after a huge goblin siege walked right in through a hole in the wall the guy before me had left during a renovation project.

You'll have an easier time than we did, if only because of continuity of leadership.  I attempted to use our self-destruct switch only to have it fail due to other folks' constructions, for example.   Keeping it small is a good plan too.

In the long run, don't worry too much about masons/mining; they'll get better and you can always change labor preferences.  You can run construction almost as a sideline depending on the location and trade for decorative stones and gems so you send a very pretty fort into the unfathomable abysses, which would be pretty entertaining.

Oh man. I was going to try this, and I spent the entire afternoon looking for a site with an OPEN bottomless pit, genning a dozen worlds and embarking over and over. When I finally managed, I realized the same thing :P

You mean you kept finding closed bottomless pits?

Dude, that's easy to fix.

1. Find the hill above your bottomless pit.

2. Carve around it with channels.

3. Carve the last channel with a single dwarf from the outside.

4. Massive cave in.

5. ???

6. PROFIT.

S'what I did. I can post a movie if someone can direct me as to how.

Oh, also, current one is slated to be about 23 floors. Currently working on 3rd and 4th floors.

the only thing is hard to manage is to have a farming area in an in-chasm tower. maybe with magma and water you can make an obsidian layer on wich you can farm if muded ...

Ah but you see I'm a purist, I don't want to do artificial terraforming, I like to build an elaborate, dwarf-made construction in the middle of natural formations, for contrast.

Interesting bug: If you visit a site in adventure mode, then settle a fortress on the previously-adventured chasm, there will be a z-level of ground underneath the chasm tiles. You can dig underneath the chasm.

I wonder what happens if you collapse the chasm tiles...
