Have carp (and other fish) been nerfed?
« on: September 17, 2008, 03:11:15 am »

I just jumped into a crowd of several carp and a sturgeon and slaughtered them all, keeping 4 carp heads as tokens, even.

Somehow I feel these are not the infamous doomcarp, but instead a newer, tamer carp.

Then again I did see a sturgeon kill a human guard in adventure mode earlier...  ???

You haven't been in a "wall o' fish".

That, and they mostly got their reputation in Dwarf Fortress mode.

I have indeed! I deliberately snuck into the middle of one and I've been mopping up the stragglers. 13 carp, 1 longnose gar, and 3 sturgeons so far. I'm hoping to make the river run red with blood.

The trick it seems is to not alert them while on land get dragged in by them, but sneak up and get into the water without being grabbed first.

Though with the way they pwn NPC's I guess their real badassery is in fortress mode. I should find zombie carp I guess.

Dude, go to a terrifying river. I went to one and all the fish were zombies and attacked instead of trying to swim away. They even crawled up on shore after me.  :D

Yeah, Evil areas with Water are probably the most awsome locations in the game!!!

It makes the HFC (or HSC!?!) look like child's play!

You have not seen true horrors 'till you follow a large school of fish to the bottom of a waterfall. I mean a good twenty tiles, with five fish in every tile. With ten fish attacking you every turn. It's not the carp themselves, it's the counterattacks making you tired. Then when you fall over exhausted, all is over.

Thing is you wouldn't be able to blow it up with a Bottle of Stuff would you?

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

I have never built a fortress near a major river before, and I don't get the carp thing.

However, I've met carp in Adventure mode, and I seek out their destruction like i do any other thing I encounter in the wild.

they swim faster then I do, and its hard to turn the river red with bood when I can only chop up one or two Carp when my Hammerman leaps into the school before the rest of them out-swim me.

Sneaking never occurred to me... I'm usually only noticed of their existance when I see 90 pages of "Carp drowned" spam.

The reasons that carp are so terrible are listed under explanation in http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Carp.

If you don't want to read that, though, the main reasons are that dwarves will dodge carp attacks in fortress mode by jumping into the river. This will then cause them to drown almost immediately.
