Additionally, I would like to see masons capable of using hammers to get their jobs done, craftsdwarves with knives...hmm.

Real dwarves don't use tools!

Real dwarves use spit, grime, and their own two hands.

It's called noodling, you use your extremities ( Fingers ) to get a fish to latch onto your arm, you then wrestle the fish all the way to a stable surface that is well out of the water, don't be afraid to throw it around, it'll tenderize the meat.

I foresee farmers using their ☼Iron Hoe☼ to crush invaders the way miners use their +Copper Pick+.  All in all, it would be cool if people set to Farming (Fields) used some tool.  Using spears for fishing would be interesting.  Would it allow fisherdwarfs to catch carp and such?

Awesome, when I go into Adventure Mode, I can wield a Hoe of Destruction.

Once tools go in, hopefully the workshops will be broken down somewhat into a smaller number of new room types geared toward labor, which we can furnish as needed (and enable/disable labor and materials as desired). Most of the necessary buildings can be created on-site, if need be. Tables could serve for most rooms, but a few specialty buildings would still exist: anvils, querns, mills, stills, looms, spinning wheels, and the various heat sources (campfire/magma/oven/kiln/furnace/forge/etc).

That would fit in great with this concept:

In the suggestions list under "Room system defined Workshops".

The trouble with this idea is everyone has a different tolerance, for how much of this kind of thing they'll put up with.

If planting requires a hoe, will harvesting require a scythe? As nice as it would be to equip my adventurer with an awesome but impractical scythe, this renders the "All dwarves harvest" option next to useless.

Harvesting and planting is possible without tools, but it's rather slow and makes your back ache. Cutting rocks without tools.. it'll make your back hurt too, but you won't get much done.

why don't you just have a raw, unarmed level of ability, and tag.

say, fisherdwarf is fishing with bare hands, has x% to catch fish, can catch x size fish whatever, and in the "V" screen, it'll have the skills, and below have, missing spear.

and then, you have a tooled level of ability.

that's what happens when you have tools, the more tools, the more complex the tools, the better quality the tools, the better.

it'll also encourage people to not put all their eggs in one dwarf sotosp34k.

Hey maw! Dem Gobbos is tryin' ta steal the Plump Helmets. Hand me my pitchfork!

Never underestimate the power of the pitchfork. It's one hell of a weapon, and farmers tend(ed?) to get quite good at wielding it.

And that just makes me want to have the farmers have pitchforks in the game.  :)

Also, pitchforks were used to move everything from manure to hay, so if they broke the skin, they probably infected the wound.

I hope they wash the pitchfork between jobs. Then again, being dwarfs, they probably don't...  :'(

Why would anyone waste time washing a pitchfork? You're not going to eat off it. --unless you're a horse, in which case you east off the ground you poop on.

I've used a lot of pitchforks and I never washed any of them.

I'd rather have the Dwarves to Fish Wrestle ( A common sport, just make sure you don't go without a friend, they get heavy ) , it'll make them greater at wrestling, swimming, and most of their base stats.

FISH WRESTLING; the manly way to get fish, you need to bring friends, it may get DWARVEN, and you just wrestle it until you get that sea lemming into the fishery!!!

for an added thrill, try sturgeon, for that near-drowning thrill!

Don't you mean the Hypo-thermic near-drowning thrill?
