Leaders of Goblin ambushes, a surprise
« on: September 16, 2008, 06:56:37 am »

I recently had a surprise at a recent ambush.

I got the warning about an ambush (and promptly lost a ranger and its two dogs) and when i looked a the goblin squad i was wondering who that crossbow dwarf was near my ranger, some lost guard?

Nope, it turned out that it was the leader of the goblin squad. So appearantly an outcast dwarf brought it to a position of (minor) authority in the goblin civ.

Unfortunately he got away, i would have loved to cage him and then strip him from all his weapons and armour. Could haven been usefull...

The later execution by training...

That was surprise. I wonder, could one also get dwarf sieges if multiple dwarf civs are at war with eachother?

children snatched by goblin baby snatchers grow up to be members of goblin society.

While on the subject, I just had a baby snatched and I can't wait to see if the kid turns up in a goblin seige or ambush in the future.  Whats messed up about it, is that the baby was snatched out of the arms of the speardwarf mother who was chasing the goblin :(

That happened to me - I killed the leaders of the goblin civilisation off (one of them turned up in the very first ambush I got!) and just when I'm expecting a bit of breathing space, along come twice as many goblins, twice as tough becuase evil mcbeardy and his friends took over the goblin civilisation! Seriously, the second the goblin leaders died a new dwarven civilisation turned up.

Hi!

Peas: That's an easy one.

During world generation, goblins do a lot of baby snatching. In fact, I have very often seen that goblins got seriously outnumbered by people from other races in their own dark fortresses, and I regularly see goblin dark fortresses without any living goblins at the end of world generation.

King Doom: Are you sure that it is a dwarven civilization? Or could it be a goblin civilization with a major dwarven citizenship? I suggest checking the civilization screen.

I have never heard of something like this, but my guess would be that the goblin civ closest to you got vanquished and the next goblin civ simply moved in to fill the gap. After all, there can be many goblin civilizations, and you usually start out getting in touch with only one of them...

Alabaster: I am not sure, but I think it will currently not happen. Simulation of life cycle outside the direct sphere of influence of the player does not occur after world generation. Thus, the baby will probably not grow older after leaving the map and also not change from captive to citizen for the goblin civ.

So, currently, your only option for influencing siege personnel is adventure mode, as adventurers who have served civs and retired there may appear on their civ screens, it seems. Over in the adventure mode discussion, people are discussing the potential for that.

Yeah the goblin babysnatching is very cool, especially the first time when you're not expecting it.

I've got a question: Theoretically, if a military dwarf had their child stolen and then that child showed up later as the leader of a goblin ambush/seige and the parent slew the child, would that give the parent a negative thought?

That's how I know there's a new civilisation, from the civ list. It's a dwarven one that popped up. No noticable leaders, no imports or exports, last one on the list. Only turned up when the evil dwarves started attacking me, I know, I was keeping an eye on it to see what leaders the goblins had left.

I had the opposite seem to happen in a world I recently generated. By which I mean one of the dwarven civilizations not only had several goblin local rulers, but even had a goblin queen! It was still considered a 'dwarven' civilization though, so I'm a bit baffled as to how that one worked out. I'd never seen dwarven lands ruled by anything other than dwarves.

So Goblin Society is based on Labyrinth?  I cann't wait for David Bowie to be leading the next goblin siege.

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

First time I experienced that was while testing my mod out with one of the newer versions. 39a? Something like that. Anyway, I discover that my previously non-ambushing but quickly attacking races are now friendly and show up with caravans to trade. Disappointing...but then I get an ambush!

Goblins, lead by Frost Giants (one of the now neutral races, and quite nasty). I get to fight them after all! Just, not the way I'm used to, not without ticking them off by killing off the caravans, at least.

This is funnier if you imagine the song being sung until the last part, which is read by Ben Stein.

Eh, they're both drawn from similar material. Goblin baby-snatching and assimilation is a normal thing.

David Bowie is not a normal thing, not that there's anything wrong with that.

One time I got hit with 3 goblin ambushes at the same time, one of them lead by a dwarf, one by a human, and one by an elf.
