[40d] slowness since 40's
« on: September 16, 2008, 06:54:52 am »

Just started up a fresh (vanilla) DF 40d world and ... WTF?
everything is terribly slow as compared to the last version I played.

The titlescreen credits and demo scrawled for about five minutes.
Used create world now (standard world)....this took ages to offload.
Used the autofinder to find an interesting location. (which also took long-ish)
Created a bunch of dorfs (selection was slow to respond as was it in the finder)
at the site the dorfs are terribly slow.
I try to get to the help-file on displaying FPS, but it won't allow me to move the selection down.

Is this (the slowdown) the display problem I read about earlier?

ps My processor is not really taxed at 7-13% but for mem usage DF is the main consumer at 256K.

What was the last version you used before 40d?

That would be 39e.
DL-ed several updates in between, but never had time to really try them out.

Go to the data/init/init.txt file. There's a few things you can do that to speed it up.

[PARTIAL_PRINT:x:n] - set this to YES and 2. If it causes flickering, mess with the number and G_FPS_CAP a bit.

[G_FPS_CAP:n] - Sets the cap on graphical framerate. The lower the GFPS, the faster your game will run. I usually set this to 10. Projectiles and rediculously fast dwarves might visually skip a tile once in a while, but the effect is graphical only and has no effect on the game itself.

[PRIORITY:x] - I usually set this to ABOVE_NORMAL or HIGH. Higher priority settings seem to make the game run faster, but it might make it difficult to close in event of a crash. Ctrl-alt-delete will still kill it in such an event, though.

[TEMPERATURE:x] and [WEATHER:x] - turning these to OFF can have a significant effect on game speed, if you don't mind losing out on a few game features. I generally keep WEATHER off, since it does nothing except irritate your dwarves once in a while; TEMPERATURE does a lot more things in the game, but turning it off also increases your speed by a lot more, too.

The World Without Knifebear — A much safer world indeed.
regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

thanks for the hints.
I had them already set to yes:4 and gfps20 and priority high, this did nothing for the fps (still 15 in create world menu), if anything, menus became more difficult to scroll.

I'll try your even more conservative settings.
Edit: they help, the framerate now fluctuates between 16 and 80.

Having to reduce features would be hugely dissapointing though,
as in 39e the dorfs dug tunnels like rabbid rabbits.

There has to be a huge bug eating chips, somewhere in the 40's.  :'(
